I'd like to hear more about Saga. I hear from some people that it's the best comic ever, and others that it's severely overblown. Where do folks here weigh in?

I bought the first two Saga trades and enjoyed them, but I don't feel the need to read anymore. Haven't read other BKV unless he did the first Runaways trade, which I felt similarly about.

It's good, worth a read. It's not my favorite, but I can see why it has such wide appeal. Image comes out with so many new series and so many of them are overblown or short lived that I don't even try to keep up, even if they have a huge catalog of quality product. So I didn't get in on it from the start. I don't really hang out with people who read comics. They know I do, but none of them do. Usually whenever something comic related comes across their plate they ask me about it, let me know, or link me on Facebook. The new Deadpool footage, the Strain TV series, whatever. Usually it's more of a "Hey, you're into this stuff right?" kind of thing. But with Saga I must have had the series recommended to me by three people who although are active readers, tend to not read comic books at all. They all follow the trades. But by the third non-comic-reader recommendation from someone I know in real life I figured I had to pick it up, it has some pretty impressive mainstream appeal. The story is good, the art is very impressive. The pacing is just the right blend of fast and slow paced moments. It's worth a look for sure. There's nothing particularly wrong with it, not anything to complain about. It's just not at the top of my list of favorites simply because maybe it's not the genre I typically enjoy. But I still like reading it even if I'm much more excited by Afterlife With Archie when it shows up. |

The Witching Hour was a mixed bag. Some good stories, some meh ones. I definitely enjoyed the Ghosts anthology Vertigo did more.
Saga is a very good book. I was in as soon as I heard about it, and bought the first 18 issues as they came out. I replaced the first 6 with the trade and sold them for a nice chuck of change I turned into other books (including the first 2 Saga trades). After 18 I stopped buying individual issues and will trade wait. The story is solid and the character work is excellent. The art is excellent as well and Fiona Staples is deserving of all the recognition she gets, but BKV (& Staples) has a penchant here to try to shock and be edgy, which at times pushes the story or character arcs along and at others is a detriment to the story/character work because pages are wasted on "controversial bits" that are meant to shock or draw attention, but are not really part and parcel of the story and for me negatively impact the pacing and narrative flow. Sometimes you can lose 4-6 pages of an issue to play on that edgy bit, which can really wreak havoc on a single issue (it's less apparent when reading in trade). It's a big reason why I stopped buying the individual issues and switched to trade waiting. I have no issues with breast-feeding, giant's testicles, or images on the TV screen faces of a character, except when they are there for their own sake and not the story's sake. Comics are too expensive on a per page of content basis for me to be willing to pay for stuff like that that doesn't serve the stories or the characters. Include them if you must, but don't spend pages reveling in them that interrupt the stuff that's actually good about the series i.e. the story and characters.

I've found Saga to be pretty fun and I've been only a moderate fan of BKV before (I liked Runaways and his Dr. Strange. I enjoyed his run on Ultimate X-Men, but not enough to get it all. And I quickly lost interest in Y: The Last Man and Ex Machina). My non-regular comicreading friends and relatives seem to like it a lot as well. There is some explicit content, but it didn't bother me (used to quite a bit in European comics). Overall I like the characters, it moves along at a nice pace.
I do dislike the framing of the story being narrated by one of the characters, because she sometimes tells the readers how some things are going to end up in advance. Something that annoyed me endlessly during Stephen King's later Dark Tower books as well.

If I were to generalize, the easy way to describe it is 'Romeo and Juliet in space', with a bit of 'Starship Troopers' thrown in. It's got really good art, and an entertaining, well, thought out story. There's a certain amount of random graphic violence nad nudity to make sure it has 'indy cred' that is gratitutious, IMO, but otherwise it's a strong read. |

I find Saga to be overrated, like a majority of BKV's well received books. While he's a solid writer, there's that little hint of "I know more than you" in a majority of his titles that he needlessly crams into each book. In Ex-Machina and Y, there's those tidbits of facts that aren't quite related to the story but hits you on the head with this. It's what drew me away from enjoying Ex-Machina. I tried Saga, just didn't pull me in. His best work, IMO, is Pride of Baghdad. |

Ha! One of these days I should regale you with my Morrison SDCC story. Actually, its pretty damn cool.
