Shax, you just wanted to show a pic of a Giant-Size Man-Thing...didn't you?
I cannot vote because I have only ever read one issue of Man-Thing in my life...it was from the second volume, issue 4 I believe.

Most of the comics I'm reading at the moment are Marvels from 1982.

I know nothing about Swamp Thing, tbh, but Gerber's Man-Thing is pretty darn close to being my favourite 70s book so I have to give it a vote. I just love that series and the stories he told.

I like both runs and both characters but I have to give the edge to Man-Thing. There simply isn't anything in the Wein-Wrightson Swamp Thing that compares to "A Question of Survival," "The Kid's Night Out," "A Candle for Sainte-Cloud," or "Night of the Laughing Dead."
Cei-U! I summon the swamp critters!

tingramretro, reminded me that Richard Rory is one of the best supporting characters in Marvel Universe and having noted that and I've totally forgot about him and keep in mind - I never, ever embraced Man-Thing because this character never, ever caught my fancies and it was one of Gerber's unique character and that's one of his best masterpieces that I never had the courage to read it because of the bizarre looking character that he created. Swamp Thing on the other hand is a Len Wein's masterpiece and I have to remind everyone that Swamp Thing was drawn by Bernie Wrightson and Bernie is a master at his own craft. You just can't ignore him at all and he's co-created it with Len Wein. Some of you here thinks Len Wein created Swamp Thing - I disagree because Bernie helped Len in designing it and making the muck creature work for them. Getting back to Man-Thing - I did remember that Man-Thing has more variety and better supporting characters but the problem with Man-Thing is his grotesque face and that's alone make him very unique and more unique than Swamp Thing. Now, with all that in mind - I have to drop my vote for Swamp Thing and not vote at all because they are EQUALLY good for their own good. It's his huge red eyes and three long weird looking elephant-like trunks that drives me away and that's my problem that I just can't past that. When, I look at Bernie's masterpiece it's embraces me and I learned to enjoy it more than Man-Thing. So, they are both equal and they should be praised EQUALLY for their own unique way.

I'm surprised no one yet has mentioned the earlier versions of "Muck Monsters" which Swamp Thing and Man-Thing were modelled after The Heap from Hillman Publications debuted in 1942 in Air Fighters Comics #3 and was a backup feature in Airboy Comics for many years. He was revived several times in the 70s and 80s in Skywald Magazine as well as Eclipse Comics The original as far as I know was the 1940 SF short story ""It" by the great Theodore Sturgeon. It's been anthologized multiple times and considered a classic

I'm surprised no one yet has mentioned the earlier versions of "Muck Monsters" which Swamp Thing and Man-Thing were modelled after The Heap I did First off, though Roy Thomas claims Len Wein inadvertently stole the idea from Gerry Conway, let's be honest in that neither origin story is particularly compelling, and both premises are derivative of The Heap. So I don't really care which company invented what. I'd rather look at where both premises went after their initial generic appearances. The original as far as I know was the 1940 SF short story ""It" by the great Theodore Sturgeon. It's been anthologized multiple times and considered a classic It eventually made it to comics as well: Officially, no one acknowledges that either Man-Thing or Swamp Thing were based upon these earlier characters.

WOW. Swamp Thing was leading by two votes just last night. Things changed pretty quickly! If you had a equal/neutral vote selection - I would had voted for that easily Shax. The Heap pointed out by Ish ... If that was Man-Thing - I would had no problems with that and I did not know there was a character by the name of Heap.
