Yeah, if Ploog was the only artists for the length of Gerber's writing Man-Thing, it would be a different story. It really would have come down to an artist draw off between Ploog and Wrightson, as with two superstars of macabre like those two, it's easy for the story to be secondary in importance. Agreed! If Ploog had drawn the entire Classic (1970's) MT series I'm sure it would have been tougher for me to pick ST over MT. It's almost a draw between Wrightson & Ploog re: their artistic ability when it came to these horror titles; they were the masters of their craft back in the '70's/'80's. I think the issues I have are Ploog inked by Chiaramonte, which probably doesn't benefit Ploog.

Gray Morrow was even better: The very reason Ploog was fired was that he couldn't keep to deadlines. There was just no way he would have been able to stay with Man-Thing for the entire run.

Now that Halloween is coming up, this thread is making me want to dig out my Roots of the Swamp Thing HC & the Man-Thing Omnibus. After reading through this thread, I'm of the opinion that these two titles shouldn't be compared too much - though the origin of each character was extremely similar, that's where the similarities end - after the origin, these two are completely different characters - both in terms of appearance, intelligence level, and the storylines themselves.
Re: MT, I will say that the character's appearance is much more grotesque/stomach-turning that ST's - whereas ST still looks fairly humanoid, MT has a much more horrific appearance.
I will say that the MT issue with the depressed clown (can't remember the name of the story) was one of the best individual comics I've ever read. Quite horrific/creepy, with superb art by Mike Ploog - IMHO, Ploog did his best work when drawing horror comics (MT, WBN, etc.) I didn't love the depressed clown story largely because Gerber failed to explain how the clown was able to manipulate events from beyond the dead. He suggested several times that there was a metaphysical significance to the swamp, but he never managed to connect that to how a dead clown came back to life with the ability to manipulate reality around him. Also not psyched that the dude killed himself based on an incorrect assumption, and yet there was no pivotal moral about this by the close. "Kid's Night Out" (Giant-Size #4) will always be my absolute favorite. Similar premise, but far more disturbingly grounded in everyday reality and lacking the unsettling suicide angle.

Man-Thing for me. I think he just looks more cool with that Gonzo the muppet kind of face.

Well now knowing that is the reason for Ploog's absence that is completely understandable on Marvel's part. Is that page from Man-Thing or Giant-Size?

Gracias Senior Bradley. Edit: Also reprinted in Monsters Unleashed #3, which of course, is one of the issues I don't have.
