I'm usually militant with my books and their condition, so when I got a (single) tape tear on a $35 book or spilt Ribena on another I was livid. I will only use tape if:- - the bag has a flap and the tape will go on the flap behind the bag, which in itself is behind a board
- the book isn't going to be opened anytime soon
- the tape is COMPLETELY REMOVED if it is going to be opened.

I use an archival tape that is double sided that I can stick onto the back of the bag, and the flap can fold over and stick onto it. Not all my books have it yet, though.

It's completely my fault. I had a book with no plastic under a book with bag board and exposed tape.

AAAAGH! A cheap solution some of my dealer friends use are those circular price stickers: Totally cost effective, small surface, and less adhesive so far less likely to snag something they shouldn't while still keeping your bag snugly closed.

I always remove the tape first before taking out or putting in a book. I've learned that the hard way too.

Every time I open a book, I do one of the following:
a) Remove tape and stick somewhere to be reapplied after reading b) Throw it away...tape is replaceable, some books are not

The situation was that there was one book that had a self sealing bag, but it was open and caught the Action book ( that had no bag) underneath it. I have gone to placing 20 or so books in a magazine bag for storage instead of one bag for each book.

So much adhesive so easily exposed if the bag is not closed all the way.

I use the Scotch brand Magic tape (the slightly frosty looking tape) to seal my bags. It's less adhesive than the transparent tape. I also only use a single small square-sized strip -- just enough to keep the bag sealed, but not enough surface to accidentally get stuck to the cover. Occasionally, it will get stuck but if you peel slowly and carefully, you can get it off without damaging the book. I'm also neurotic enough that when I buy a book that is already bagged and boarded and it has two strips of tape, or some other taping that is not to my liking, I remove it and replace it with my own.

Good topic that I have never seen discussed before.
I've never used tape of any kind on my bags. What does that piece of tape accomplish?
