Two days later, it doesn't seem the covid vaccine itself was a big deal, but turns out I accidentally gave myself a handicap that made the aftermath worse than it had to be.
About a week ago, I went into Vitalant to make a blood donation (wanted to get one in because two covid and two shingles shots means it'll be quite a while before I can do it again), and they asked me if I'd do what they call a double red, in which they take two units' worth of red cells and return the plasma and platelets. Figured what the heck, since there seemed to be a need and I'd never done that before. "Smaller needle" was also a selling point.
Well, turns out that having roughly 20% of your red blood cells removed is a very noticeable energy drain, and the four-month wait before I can donate again implies a slow recovery. Then add getting a covid shot just a few day later, which saps more energy in activating the immune system, and I was dragging myself through my workday yesterday. At least I feel somewhat better this morning after sleeping from roughly 10-10. I've already put in a time off request for the few days after my second covid shot next month just in case.
Effects of the vaccine itself: a sore arm that peaked at night and was already feeling better the next morning, and certainly a portion of the fatigue the last couple of days.
Lesson learned: Don't deplete your system before stressing it. Seems so obvious now.

Had 1st Pfizer vaccination at 10am. Great nurse as didn't even feel the injection at all. No adverse effects or symptoms since so my luck THE 2nd shot in 3 weeks will kick my butt?!?

The second shot did nothing to me other than make me tired. Anecdotally, I've heard this a lot with the pfizer shots, whereas Moderna seems to be far worse with shot #2. And it's not the nurse; it's the vaccine. Requires an extremely small needle so you really don't feel anything. I felt the first one, but it didn't hurt. I honestly didn't feel the second one at all and wasn't sure she'd stuck me yet.

For me, the sore arm was a gradual thing starting several hours later, and the fatigue hit the next day. I think I've read that 24-48 hours after the shot is the main block of time for side effects to manifest. Hopefully tomorrow goes as well for you as today did.

With my 2nd Pfizer, I had a little arm soreness about 12 hours after the shot that lasted for under 2 hours, but was dead tired the rest of the day I got the shot and slept a good portion of it. But I have been having some hypertension issues that have left me fatigued at other times the past few weeks, and I have scheduled a new sleep study for my sleep apnea as I am not getting as much restful sleep as I should and I may need a new C-Pap or to recalibrate the one I have as it has been 10 years since my last sleep study, so there are other factors than just the vaccine dosage that were possibly contributing to the tiredness I felt post-second dose. -M

And now I've learned that asymptomatic covid is a real thing. Vitalant tests all donations for covid antibodies, and the one I made a few days before my first vaccination came back positive. So at some point in the last year or so, I contracted the virus and never knew it. While I have been staying in as much as possible and faithfully masking and distancing when I do go out, it's still sobering to think that I was infected and infectious for a couple of weeks without any idea. Nor did that diligence keep me from catching it myself in the end. It's still a dice roll, I guess; you just try to shrink the odds as much as you can. I suppose I can count myself lucky that I'm one of the people who wasn't harmed by it. I truly hope I didn't harm anyone else.

Even if you do all the right things, try your best to avoid spreading it or catching it, it doesn't always work. And while you evidently had a period while you were infectious, at least you were trying your best to avoid spreading it. For what it's worth, even if someone caught it from you, you didn't harm them, the virus did.

Got my dates through for both my vaccine shots today. 9th May first shot (which is just under 3 weeks away) and 26th July for second one.

Nah, it's fine as long as the 2nd jab is no later than 13 weeks later. I assume I'll get the AstraZeneca Oxford one, but don't know for sure. The gap between my two jabs is 11 weeks. That amount of time between shots is quite normal over here in the UK from what I've heard. On a related note, almost 50% of the population here have received their first jab already. By comparison, France, which has a similar population to Britain, have given just 18% of their population their first dose. Currently, the entire adult population of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are on course to have been offered at least the first jab by the end of July. That's a phenomenal success story for the NHS in what is the biggest inoculation program in British history.

For what it's worth, even if someone caught it from you, you didn't harm them, the virus did. Not helping matters is the fact that one of the "stickier" variants is becoming the dominant version of the virus out there, at least in the US from what I read. The symptoms are not necessarily more severe, but since it sticks to the body's cells easier, it's far more contagious, and you can get infected from shorter exposures and smaller viral loads. It's easy to want to back off slightly from the vigilance as I know I for one am tired of the restrictions and always being "on" when I am out, but stuff like this just reinforces that the vaccination push is in a close race against mutation, and we are close to the finish line.

Happy Patriots Day to my fellow and former Bay Staters around these parts!
Would've been a beautiful day for the Marathon, but I'm sure it will be just as perfect in October.

I very much feel the adage "a failure of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine" today at work. However, since it is work, it does make it my problem. Sigh.

Guilty on all charges. I'm hoping there will not be violence tonight.
