Thank you everyone for all the kind words and thoughts! It is really appreciated. Things are settling down a bit now so I thought I'd check in. My wife is fine! Here's the story: A year ago she was diagnosed with having a brain tumor right at her brain stem. We went to Stanford to get a second opinion, and it turns out it was an arachnoid cyst, which is a fairly common congenital disorder. The only concern was if it enlarges or not. Recently she was having aches and pains all over her body, as well as a strange heart pain. We took her to the ER and her heart was fine, and her neurologist had another MRI done. Our primary care doctor reviewed the MRI results, and told us it looked like the cyst had enlarged. At that point we were very concerned and went back to Stanford. They showed us the two past/present MRI's side by side, and there was no evidence of any enlargement of the cyst. My wife is a very light sleeper, the smallest noise wakes her up, and she has frequent anxiety attacks at night. She is also a teacher in Special Education. So her symptoms are likely stress related. She hasn't experienced any aches or pains the last few days and is going to try a medication to help her sleep. We are frustrated at the local doctors, one of them still insists she has a brain tumor. But I believe Stanford has some of the best doctors and that is who we choose to believe. Thanks again guys, and especially a big thank you to Coke & Comics for taking on the Front Page. Excellent job by the way! I was certain my wife was in trouble at first and my whole world changed. I could not think about anything but getting the best help for her. I accepted a new shift with more hours at work and have been busy taking care of our two girls while my wife gets some rest. But I'll be poking my head in here a bit more as things return back to normal. Glad to hear that things are starting to get back to normal. Here's wishing you both the best.

So, I've switched to buying comics online but until March I'm still getting my comics at the awful local place. Went in Wednesday and was going to ask if they'd pulled my three titles (knowing they most likely hadn't). Well there was nobody around to even ask. Waited a few minutes, then got them off the shelf and left. Got a call yesterday that my copy of Thor (but not Raputin or Gotham by Midnight) was ready for pick up. Apparently now they shelf the books on Wednesday and then when someone feels like doing it (Friday this week) they go and pull books off the shelf to fill pulls as best they can with what hasn't been bought up.

That's what my old LCS did and exactly why I stopped going. That and him just flat out not ordering the things that didn't come from the five publishers at the front of the catalog. I can't skip work every Wednesday to be waiting outside his door at 10am at the off chance some speculator has decided to buy every copy of something on my pull list.

It's ridiculous. It's like I signed up to be a lower priority.

I may have gotten myself fired from the pizza job today.
Yesterday there was some confusion when I was given my bank. The manager was supposed to enter $20, but only entered $2. So I gave her $18 back instead of making her log me off, cash me out, and log me on again. Seemed easy.
Every delivery reduces $1.20 from what you owe back for that bank. So if you do ten deliveries, at the end of the night you will owe $8. If you do enough deliveries, the store can owe you money by the end of the night. Well, since I only got $2 I should have been in the positive by my second delivery. At the end of the night I was asked to pay $7 as if I had a $20 bank. I told the manager and she said she was tired and going home and didn't feel like fixing it tonight, but would tomorrow. That right there is incredibly irresponsible for a manager to do. If the cash register was short $18 you better believe she'd stay until she figured out what the problem was.
Today I showed up an hour early because I knew she wouldn't have looked into it in the morning. I came in and asked if she did, she said no but she'll get around to it. I said I'm not clocking in until I get my money. This is how business works in my experience. It would have taken her five minutes to just look at the slip I signed at the end of the night when I cashed out to see what was wrong. I already told her exactly what was wrong and exactly what I'm owed. It's easy. She just doesn't want to do it. I regularly have to chase her down for things like mileage if I go to another store to pick up supplies, or to actually sign me in if I clock in early, since the time clock won't let me do it with manager approval. She says she'll get around to it and never does. And never adjusts the clock later.
So anyway, I waited an hour, that entire time she kept herself busy in the back doing inconsequential work in the walk in solely to avoid me. After the hour was up and it was time to clock in I told my coworkers I waited an hour and wasn't going to wait another. I walked out.
Today is the busiest day of the year for pizza, and we were given two weeks warning that everyone would be working today and anyone who flakes is fired. So tomorrow I'll see if she sticks to it. If not, and if she doesn't have my money, I'll be calling the regional manager and getting transferred to another store anyway.

She pulls stuff like that with everyone all the time. I feel bad for the RM. I won't bother him if she has my $18. He gets so many calls about her.

All the more reason to call, if its repeated behavior you have to let people know or else it just keeps happening.

I have been feeling a bit down lately, but my brother's gift for my upcoming birthday is sure to cheer me up: A weekend in Amsterdam with tickets to see Ms. Patti Labelle in concert! And this will be our hotel:

CHINA HAS INVADED MY FILM-BLOG!!!! I've been running my film-blog for about four years without incident, and without many comments: NATURALISTIC! UNCANNY! MARVELOUS!Now, possibly because some US studio has acquired the rights for a couple of Chinese films I reviewed back in Jan 2014, I got a notice from Blogger telling me that they'd reset my blogpost. which reviewed those 2 films, to "draft." The language of the notification is naturally written with such legal circumlocutions that it's not clear what was the offending material. Presumably it's the image of a lobby-card for one of the two films, since that's the only image reproduced. The message says that I can file a counter-claim if I think that I have the right to post the material, but what are the chances that Blogger will find against someone with deep pockets who threatens to sue them? I think I have to assume that the lawyers behind this film have done this not just with my blog, but with any blogs they located that reproduced images w/o their permission. I'm wondering if there's other recent precedent for this sort of "alleged copyright infringement." Many years ago both Disney and the Lucasfilm people went after Internet people who used their images w/ permission, but eventually wiser heads prevailed, when the big shots decided that the free publicity was more important. Possibly the company that produced the films is antsy about releasing the films in the U.S. and wants to make sure their rights are protected. Anyway, only the one post has been set to draft, and though the content of the blogger-letter is evasive, I think they will allow me to republish the review sans the image. I don't really care that much about the review, much less the two movies themselves, so it's no skin off my nose. If my hypothesis is correct, it should be harder right now to find illustrated reviews online for the Chinese films TAI CHI ZERO and TAI CHI HERO. Ah-- my first purge--!

Hmm, I just tried searching the names of the two films and Google says at the bottom of the search page:
"In response to a complaint we received under the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act, we have removed 1 result(s) from this page. If you wish, you may read the DMCA complaint that caused the removal(s) at ChillingEffects.org."
Only one? Surely not just mine?
Strange and stranger yet.
