Thanks for the suggestion with that link. Choosing the correct parts is the hardest part for sure. Especially when I want to salvage parts. All I really want is a GPU and a motherboard. And a blu ray drive but choosing that will be far easier. Right now I have a fast processor and lots of ram so I'm fine reusing those. And I plan on upgrading hard drives as time goes on but not necessarily at the beginning. Glad to help! I did a ton of research last year, and bought and built a new computer this year, so I've just gone through all of this and am happy to share. It's.. a LOT, but fun once you get the hang of it. I also started with trying to upgrade my old one, but few of my parts were reusable. They just couldn't cut it, but I got it for gaming. If you already know all of this, I apologize. I don't mean to assume you don't know things that you do, but I want to share some precautions based on everything I learned. One of the biggest is to make sure you get a motherboard that is the same socket type of your CPU, or it won't work. I didn't know there were so many different types when I started, and that is the primary reason I ended up having to upgrade nearly everything. I think I only kept the case, the RAM (which I had previously upgraded anyway) and the DVD drive. Anyway, I digress. I don't want to sidetrack the whole thread. If you want to discuss specifics, I'd be glad to. I don't know if there is enough interest here for a thread, but maybe PM. Also, the place I found most of my resources was the /r/buildapc subreddit. They are the nexus to link you to everything you could need. Just don't get lost. Yeah, you can get a powerful graphics card for a lot less than one might think as long as you're not trying to be on the bleeding edge of gaming. Dual ports, better video playback, even some light gaming, etc.

Oh, also, thanks for the clarifications on Tumblr. Unsurprisingly, it's more nuanced and complex than the vague rumors and impressions I've gleaned elsewhere online.

I know there's cool stuff, but if you fall down the rabbit hole, there are easily a couple thousand of those kids, and they're very active users. I've had to unfollow countless blogs because of all the "DIE CIS SCUM" and "F_YOU WHITEY" rage on there. Being told to check my privilege by a rich teenager because I could never understand his struggle is annoying to say the least. I imagine if you're just there to enjoy the art and comics you can avoid it, but if you express any interest in politics or social justice you'll quickly find yourself overwhelmed with this type of thing.

By the way, that's not an exaggeration. In fact, there's a VERY prominent Tumbler activist with the screenname "Die CIS Scum" on there.

I've been thinking about making a tumblr art page for awhile now. What I've heard about the community really makes me want to avoid the place. How toxic is it compared to facebook and twitter? (which are places I avoid like the plague.) Seems like there are a bunch of artists on there that aren't on places like deviantART that I couldn't follow their work otherwise.

Well, if you stay away from politics and social justice (and probably anything cosplay related) you likely won't notice it. It took a while of me exploring Tumblr before I fell into it. And simply avoiding any political blog cures it, for the most part.

What kind of searches do you do? Because I have never once come across a blog like that.

It's not from searches. It's from following blogs that post about politics and social justice. The prevailing political leanings of Tumblr are FAR FAR FAAAAAR left. The kind of far left where the idea that "All piv sex is rape" is not uncommon. I've seen that argument multiple times from multiple people. At first I was excited to follow political and social justice blogs, until I saw what they were. This is something I have seen happen more than once, and it happened exactly like this.

Maybe it's my age, or the fact that this board is the closest I get to actively participating in social media (I have a Facebook page, at my daughter's insistence, but haven't posted anything on it for literally 3 or 4 years), but I had to Google "piv". All I can say is, what the hell?

Going to Korea in a few hours. South of course. Me and my wife are meeting her family there who are traveling from Hong Kong to visit. None of us speak Korean so this should be interesting. The trip is about 10 hours. Which is a little less than my annual trip I seem to take to Hong Kong yearly. And since it's two ways each time I'm pretty much used to it by now. Taking United, which I haven't done before. For some reason I'm weary about USA airlines, although I haven't had a bad experience before. I know that there is something about long plane rides I enjoy. It's almost like a feeling of limbo. No one can really bother me (even my wife is alseep a lot of the time), and all of my concerns in the "real world" take a backseat for a period of time. That being said, I'm not sure how I feel about this trip. On one hand it's always nice to visit some place new and see my extended family despite the language barrier (my Chinese isn't that good yet). On the other hand I'm still at a standstill with getting my professional career and personal goals off the ground here stateside. I hope I'm not in a down mood the entire trip. It's only about a week though. I'll be sure to take plenty of photos and try to make the most out of it since I do like traveling. I'll be in Seoul which I hear is a great city with a great culture.

You can come back after a rest with a fresh viewpoint and renewed enthusiasm to tackle them again.

The help is very appreciated. I'm hoping to salvage as much of this computer as I can, but have not discounted the possibility I'll have to do a nearly complete rebuild. Depending on what you plan to use the computer for, you can get a damn solid system for not much money. I say go to pcpartpicker, start a new system build, and try to locate the parts you want to keep. If it finds them, upgrade away. If it has no idea what you're talking about, it might be time to start over. You can also to go /r/buildmeapc if you don't want to deal with it. Tell them you budget and what you want it for, and they will put it together for you. Very cool resource there. It's not from searches.
