So, we're in the middle of Orkan Niklas. That's not a Hungarian actor, Orkan is the German word for hurricane. It's pretty much covering most of Western Europe. We closed early today and a colleague drove me home as German Rail decided to shut down ALL regional train services for the day. Here are some pics from the media: Oh, and it comes with every precipitation one can imagine: Rain, hail, sleet and snow.

Best of luck and stay safe Pip, as well as our other European friends. I've ridden out a couple of hurricanes (one while at sea in the Navy, with a storm that had the same name as me) so I know they're not fun.

... As for fast food pizza, we have Mazzio's here, I don't know how big of a franchise they are, as I never saw them when I lived in St. Louis but they are about the best for pizza, when considering price too. My kids actually prefer Little Ceasar's and with it being the cheapest pizza out there, I am more than happy to buy it for them. Feeding two boys is never ending task. ... the only pizza I ever saw as a kid was from a Chef Boyardee box. You had to mix the crust powder with water, pour on the can of sauce, and sprinkle the little packet of parmesan cheese on top... Pizza--my favorite topic! Just wondering if you (or anyone in this convo) ever had something called Toaster Pizzas (like it sounds--little filled pies with sauce/cheese/pizza ingredients that you just popped into the toaster)? I don't think they're made anymore but I remember them fondly to this day. Seriously delish.

I just hope they never leaked or that would be really messy in the toaster.

My parents had to feed three boys. And take us to the emergency room, and buy toys and sports equipment to keep us occupied and not killing each other, and try to keep us out of the creek at the bottom of our property, etc. Which the costs are part of the reason that the only pizza I ever saw as a kid was from a Chef Boyardee box. You had to mix the crust powder with water, pour on the can of sauce, and sprinkle the little packet of parmesan cheese on top. Sometimes I really feel sorry for them because it can't have been easy. Definatly know how that feeling went, though it was just my sister and I. But my mother never worked until we were both in high school and that was part time. Most of the pizzas we got were frozen, like the cheap ones Tostinos or Tony's, about a buck each. My dad would buy shredded cheese, pepperoni and other stuff and we'd bulk it up and it would be like Red Baron's but cheaper in the long run. He was good at stretching a dollar, and I am doing it a lot now too. I know which ones you are talking about but I never at them myself, that I can recall. So, we're in the middle of Orkan Niklas. Sounds like a clazone (sp?) to me. I recently bought some Digarnio's (sp?) pepperoni pizza sticks that came with garlic butter and marinara sauce. They were quite good, and I think actually cheaper than their pizzas, but just as much food. Weird. It may have been a sale though.

All right, I will no longer complain that German rail shut down service: Thankfully, only minor injuries to two railway employees.

You forget, he's across the pond, Pizza Hut could be something different there, or considering the stereotypes about British cuisine, Pizza Hut could be a step up.... Actually, this did cross my mind too. I mean, it's a fast food chain over here, yes, but man, it's some good pizza. Not as authentic as proper Italian chains over here like Ask or Prezzo, but it's damn good food...especially for "fast food". It's about a million miles from the rubbish that McDonalds and Burger King serve. Oh, and the unlimited salad bar is to die for. Man, I'm hungry now. I just became very, very depressed.

Pizza Hut doesn't beat some of the more authentic Italian restaurant type pizzas, but compared with competitors in their niche (Papa Johns, Dominos, Little Caesars, etc), they are, in my opinion, head and shoulders above. Taco Bell I would give a solid "ok". Sometimes I willingly eat there. Most times we end up there it's because our daughter coerced us. She'd eat there almost every day if she could. I can't figure out what we did wrong in raising her. I use to eat at Taco Bell a lot more than I do now. But I use to eat out period a lot more than I do now. Even something as simple as Taco Bell I tend to appreciate more when I eat it with less frequency. As for your parenting skills DE, I think they're just fine. There are a lot worse indications of bad taste than Taco Bell. :-) As for fast food pizza , we have Mazzio's here, I don't know how big of a franchise they are, as I never saw them when I lived in St. Louis but they are about the best for pizza, when considering price too. We had Mazzio's in my college town from roughly my late teens through my mid-20s. Their cheese was sort of, for lack of a better term, plastic (more in texture than flavor), but I liked it. Really liked their sort of mustard-based dressing on the salad bar, too, which IIRC they offered on sandwiches as well.
