I enjoy looking at facebook, though like others I've found that you do have to un-follow some friends who post too frequently and/or indiscriminately.
And I agree that the format seems to kill discussion: there's a tendency towards short, simple declarations, and that in turn often leads to battle-lines being drawn at the drop of a hat.
After having been wilfully misinterpreted - as it appeared to me, at least - on there a few times, and finding that no conversation developed after trying to correct that misinterpretation, I've pretty much given up trying to express anything beyond the simplest "likes", so yeah, I'm afraid I've become one of those guys who just clicks the "like" button and doesn't say much.
I still seem to waste a lot of time on there somehow or other, though!

Came absurdly close to posting this on facebook tonight. Thought better of it, and then came absurdly close to e-mailing it to my wife. I'll share it here because, if I don't share it somewhere, I swear I will f'ing hurt myself tonight.
First, when life would kick me in the balls, I'd yell and scare away whoever was doing the kicking. Then I was told I had anger issues.
Then, when life would kick me in the balls, I'd bottle up my emotions and try to use logic and compromise. Then I was told I was arrogant and condescending.
Then, when life would kick me in the balls, I'd express my sadness. Then I was told I was weak and needy.
Then, when life would kick me in the balls, I'd eat until I didn't hurt anymore. Then I gained an ungodly amount of weight and was told I was being unhealthy.
Well, life is still kicking me in the balls. What's next?

You know my answer. I know it's been mine for 20 years. It's not the best answer and it doesn't even solve the problem. But there's a lot of shit out there in the world and sometimes there doesn't seem to be a healthy way to deal but avoidance. I've always been a bottler of my emotions. Maybe that's why I turn to the bottle. Or at least initially did. But it's true ....
When you're drinking the whole worlds still out there. But for the moment it doesn't have you by the throat.

I go on Facebook daily. I don't post to my wall too much. Or other people's walls for that matter. I do here and there but mostly talk in PM or in groups. I still conduct business on Facebook as well, buying and selling various things. Made a purchase and listed six things for sale just today.

Well, life is still kicking me in the balls. What's next? I'm sorry to hear that, shaxper. I wish I had a sure-fire solution. As it is I can only tell you of what helped me and a few friends get through really bad times: doing something unexpected (even to oneself), something that you will really enjoy, but that will demand effort. Something that brings you satisfaction, in that great "gee, I can't believe I did that" kind of way. For a friend who had problems at home, it was starting to run marathons. For another, it was joining the army reserve. For me, when I had severe career worries, it was starting karate in my late thirties (14 years ago, now). I'm convinced your own current battle to lose weight, which as I understand involves discipline and a lot of exercise, is the kind of fight that will show that ball-kicking existence who's in charge of your life. Few people have the staying power to put themselves through that. Don't give up, hang in there, and don't let anyone tell you (or even suggest) that your achievements are less than they are. And if I may preach for my own gospel... if you have any interest in the thing, karate is really neat. You get to kick people, too, which is all kinds of cool. I'm sure Jez will agree that it's a great way to clear one's head from the thousand slings and arrows of outrageous fortune. Anyway, we're here for you buddy, even when we're as clueless as I am right now.

I don't think I have ever seen/heard that term used before, but it is a sheer f*ing brilliant encapsulation of the attitude of so many people I know. -M Wish I could claim origination, but I got it from an FB-turned-IRL friend. Shows up on Google as well, possibly from some TV show. (Too tired to check after 2 straight days of intermittent Crohn's pain & also about to start getting ready for shrink visit across town. Five'll get you 10 he ups &/or supplements the Seroquel, as it's been a good 5 days, I think, since I was satisfactorily zombified.)

I was up a good chunk of last night due to tornado sirens going off every 20 minutes or so. I'd get everyone situated downstairs, and they'd stop. Wait it out for 10 minutes, go back upstairs to bed. Just get comfy in bed, and the sirens would go off again.
I'm functioning in a fog today. So. TIRED.

Facebook, of course, is where I have been spending most of my non-work-related online time & energy the last several months instead of here &/or (to a lesser extent) Baseball Think Factory. With any luck that has changed with my leaving a rather large (8,100+ & steadily growing) local group Sunday. Of course, the fallout from that on my own page (I was probably the group's most prolific poster, & certainly one of the more controversial figures, given my inability not to be sarcastic or ultra-lefty) has kept me occupied, not to mention posts on guns & such in the wake of the South Carolina horror ... Basically, people in the U.S. are flat-out psychotic on the subject of guns. A large percentage of the whole damned nation could do with a good regimen of ECT or something equally drastic. And I assume the South is the worst of all, though I suspect the West is no walk in the park for non-ammosexuals. Don't know for sure if the South is the worst, but I will say it's the only part of the country I've been in where I'd regularly seen fully stocked rifle racks in the back windows of pickup trucks. Of course that was in excess of 30 years ago, so that may have (hopefully) changed by now.
Ammosexuals? I've never come across that word before either, but it awesomely describes a lot of the gun-nuts in this country.

I'm in Arizona, which is definitely a gun-loving red state. I'm not sure if they're any more psycho than other parts of the country, but they're loony enough to have passed a law a few years ago allowing concealed-carry permit holders to take their guns into bars. Because yeah, that's a great idea....

In Wisconsin, we've been in the grips of a Republican governor & Republican controlled legislature for several years and they passed (among other things) their version of concealed-carry. Here you can also take your concealed gun into a bar, but only if you're not drinking. How that's enforceable, I'm not sure.

Georgia resident here. I'm out in the country and guns are ubiquitous, as are the idiotic bumper stickers inviting folks to "Come and Take It" below an image of an AR-15/M-16. I don't have a single family member here locally who doesn't own at least two handguns, and that list includes my mother, brother, four in-laws (BIL has an arsenal that Frank Castle would consider excessive), and (sadly) both my daughters.
I personally have a Remington 870 12-gauge shotgun and two .22 rifles, none of which have been fired in decades and are really nothing more than heirlooms. Don't even have ammo for them.
The ugliness of the gun culture is in full, monstrous effect here. I really believe the gun debate is over in this country. If Sandy Hook didn't cause us to re-evaluate, nothing will.
