With the advent of the New Year, I believe I've come to a major decision. The time for me is right to apply for retirement benefits. I've got money saved and the move out of Manhattan has dramatically lowered my monthly living expenses. I'm still healthy to enjoy retirement and look younger than my age as well (so I'm told ). After over 45 years of continual work, I'm ready for a life of ease and not being answerable to others. The way I have it figured, after paying rent and all the bills, I'll have $900 left for food and anything else. Seems I can get by comfortably even without dipping into my savings Will I just wind up getting bored? Possibly after a year or so but I'm sure that's something easily rectified. I can't come up with a good reason to postpone it any longer No. Trust me.

2017 will be a year of change for my family. My oldest daughter will be getting married. My youngest daughter will graduate from college. Our house will be paid off. I am going to work part time (25 hrs/week instead of 50 hrs/week). My wife & I hope to do some traveling while we are still young & healthy. We have seen some of our friends & relatives die or have poor health & not get to enjoy their retirement...so with the big bills (mortgage, college, wedding) paid off we decided to be semi retired & both work part time for the next 10-12 years. We started to plan this several years ago & did the big ticket items like the roof, windows, furnace, new cars, etc so we could cut back our hrs. This way we don't have to touch our retirement money for another decade & in an emergency one of us can increase our work hrs so we don't have to deplete our savings. Congratulations, md! Wise planning and a great decision. Much luck and enjoyment to you!

My 2017 is starting off kinda sucky.
Industrial action between the company where I work, and its trade union.
So I might be getting an extended 'vacation' with no pay for its duration.
I can roll with that, of course, but I've got many colleagues thinking about their loans and other commitments.
Mr Jez will be all too pleased if I just give up that job and it is a consideration, although it does pay nicely.

Congratulations, md! Wise planning and a great decision. Much luck and enjoyment to you! Thanks! It took me having a mild heart attack & my brother-in-law's death from cancer to change my perspective on work/life balance. Those 2 events happened a few years ago & motivated my wife & I to commit to making this plan work.

My teenage son has a 32" HDTV in his room and a PS3 (capable of broadcasting any streaming services or Internet videos and plays DVDs and blu-rays) and he's been watching something for the last 30 minutes (I can hear it in our room) on his fricking phone!
