Thanks to @mechagodzilla link to some online free comics, I just read my first two digital comics. Detective Comics #815, 816. A two part story about Zsasz. Pretty good, and really like the art. Plus there's a lot more than just Detective Comics. LOTS of free comics to read. So I wanted to post it here if anyone missed it in Jugger's thread about Batman's 50 deadliest villians. And thank him for posting this. I may prefer paper comics, but these are FREE!! :-) Thanks again Jugger! (link deleted) Thanks for sharing what seems like a great opportunity, but readcomiconline is willfully giving access to material while disregarding DC's copyright. Their stated defense, that they do not actually host comics but only give access to things that have been uploaded by others to image hosting services, is transparent. In other words, this is pirated material. Sorry for being the bearer of bad news. If one is to post entire DC stories on these threads, would that be considered pirated material? Is more than one page the cut-off between pirated and sampler?

Is more than one page the cut-off between pirated and sampler? I'm no legal expert, but as I understand it, a few pages to illustrate a point being discussed in a thread or post would fall under "fair use". Posting a whole issue (and why would anyone want to do that anyway?)...that's dodgier ground, and could constitute a copyright violation. As for whether the admin here would consider it pirated material, I think the answer to that would probably be yes.

I have no idea how this site is up and running. It seems to have any comics, new and old, that you can imagine.
Back when I posted at Byrne's forum, there would be regular threads where a guy would post images of an entire Byrne comic for Byrne and the rest of the board to comment on. Byrne and many others on that site where always very anti-pirating (comics, movies, TV, etc.), yet this practice wasn't frowned upon. I never could wrap my head around the justification, particularly considering those members.

Here is an interesting document on fair use. "The statute provides that fair use of a work “for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use, scholarship, or research)” is not an infringement of copyright. To determine whether a given use is fair use, the statute directs, one must consider the following four factors:
the purpose and character of the use, including whether the use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes; the nature of the copyrighted work; the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work."(highlighting mine). It seems to be perfectly fine to put copyrighted material in a review thread. Its purpose is one of criticism and education, it uses only a small fraction of every comic analyzed, and if anything it will have a positive effect on the bottom line of whoever is the owner of the original rights. Entire issues offered for free (and bringing revenues to the pirate because of the ads on the website) go against all these principles.

I have no idea how this site is up and running. The .to domain means that it's registered in the island kingdom of Tonga. According to wikipedia, they sell domains to anyone. Apparently the site is beyond the reach of copyright laws. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.to

Who would have thought 20 years ago that you could peruse adult entertainment sites with less chance of viruses that reading scanned comic books.

People now have a free version of Comixology at their disposal.

Last night I bought a 1 year membership at Costco which is situated right across the street from me. Every time I walked down a certain street, the aroma of their bakery wafted out of their air vents, enticing me beyond my control. My household consists of only me (plus Gaby the Cat), and much of what they have is overkill. But I'll make it worthwhile. And just walking around means getting a free meal with all the free samples they offer

One of my previous employers gave all of its employees a membership to either Costco or Sam's Club. I picked Sam's since Costco hadn't established a presence in my area yet, and even though I no longer work there, I renew every year. Just the savings I see on peanut butter, granola bars, Pop-Tarts, and applesauce make it a good investment, and I can shop for items for my church's activities at a discount, which is a nice perk.

It's an old code, but it checks out...
This is pretty spooky. Some phishing e-mail just got in, telling me that I must log in to some undefined website because there's a problem with my account. The scary part is that the message does mention an old password of mine. I don't use it anywhere anymore, but somebody got their hand on it... and I really don't like that idea.

Here goes nothing!
This is my first public posting using the speech recognition software on my computer. I finally bought a microphone, which is now properly installed, leaving me no more excuses for making a change I should have made long ago but was too damn stubborn to make without being forced. In that sense, my dental woes may turn out to be a blessing in disguise. It hasn't been easy the last few weeks staying off the computer, not being able to either work or play. I'm the kind of guy who has to feel productive on a daily basis. At any rate, I can get back to work on my book projects now so that's least one source of stress in my life gone.
Anyway, I just wanted to drop by and let you guys know I was up and functioning again. Sometime in the next few days, I will work out the statistics and get the wrap up for Classic Comics Christmas 2016 posted.
Cei-U! I summon the lightning… out loud!
