I just got the first 6 seasons of Smallville in the mail. Got it for a song and can't wait to dig in. Glad you picked up something you love for cheap, but I've gotta say, I never understood the love this show got. I watched a handful of episodes over the years and it always seemed like it was really badly acted, excruciatingly badly scripted and, with the absence of a flying Superman, quite boring. Oh well, different strokes and all that. A friend lent me the dvds and I didn't like it much either with one big exception: Laura Vandervoort's performance as Kara aka Supergirl. I thought she had a kind of almost other-worldly beauty that was perfect for the alien being she was playing. She lights up every scene she's in - unfortunately there aren't that many and she was written out of the show after a couple years. Too bad she wasn't given a spin-off of some kind. To a lesser extent, the actress (forget her name) who played Lois Lane was another saving grace. I enjoyed her performance as a character I dislike in the comics and thought she added some humour and energy to a show I found otherwise dull.

Sorry to hear of all your troubles Kurt. One very minor thing on the financial end - I cut my cable a few months ago and have found that I don't miss it at all and that it's a welcome saving each month.

I binge watched another 4 episodes last night and am remembering how many changes the show goes through. I'm still on season 1 and recall that Lana Lang actually marries Lex Luthor in one of the later seasons. I remember Supergirl , but not many details about her time on the show.

I tried watching Smallville when it debuted. Just seemed to be a combo of monster-of-the-week, superficial teen angst and too much kryptonite. Found other things to waste my time

I borrowed my sister's Smallville DVDs for seasons 1 and 2, but I just couldn't get into it. Too much WB in its DNA, and I guess I was too old to really get into caring about high school students' problems. I think that's why I far prefer rewatching Angel over Buffy, because the latter just doesn't connect with me at this point in my life.

When Smallville debuted it was trying to gain the " Dawson's creek" audience and it succeeded. The critiques of too much angst and kryptonite are valid. You have to remember that along with the spaceship landing in Kansas there was meteors from the planet as well which became Clarks weakness. What grabs me about the show is that you are seeing the development of Superman as he discovers his powers and wrestles with various moral choices.

The CCF Facebook page is going to hit 2,000 likes this week, possibly today.. I found this board on Facebook a little over a month ago, and I'm so blessed for having done so. I love the comic related content, and the community feel here as well.

I don't mean to put the show down too much: I'm not a Superman or DC fan in the first place so it was always going to be an uphill struggle for it to click with me. I never watched the first few dvds, but I skipped ahead to where I'd heard they started introducing other superhero characters like the Green Arrow, Supergirl, etc. Then I stopped shortly after Supergirl left the show, so i missed the last few as well.

I think that's why I far prefer rewatching Angel over Buffy, because the latter just doesn't connect with me at this point in my life. I avoided watching Buffy the first year for that very reason: I never have been a big fan of high-school dramas this new show sounded like 90210 plus vampires. But then I happened to catch part of an episode mid-way through the 2nd season and, surprised at how good it was, soon became a regular viewer. Haven't tried watching it since it ended, though. I liked the idea behind Angel - especially making Cordelia one of the main supporting cast - but found it was a bit up and down. I stopped watching for a season or two when I became bored by the storyline about Angel's son, then came back for the last year and a half or so. Talking about Smallville reminds me of one high-school show I did like, though: a Canadian series called Edgemont. Hard to put my finger on what I liked about it but I found it very appealing, somehow. Smallville's Lana Lang, Kristin Kreuk, was in it, for any fans of that actress.

I think the high school seasons of Buffy are the best. Once they got into season 4 and beyond, I felt as though the show was less about Buffy trying to juggle her personal life and her duties as a slayer, and more about the fight against evil. By the time they started to turn Buffy's house into Potential Slayer Boot Camp, I felt the show had kinda lost its way. A fantasy show starring twenty-somethings going about their daily life that resonates more with me is Charmed >ducks behind the counter<. I think Buffy is overall the better-written show, but Charmed has a special place in my heart and I still re-watch it almost as often as Buffy.

My wife has watched all of those; Buffy, Smallville, Angel and Charmed. Angel is the only one I've watched much of because I thought he was the best part of Buffy. Especially once he stopped moping over that chick.
And Charmed has Holly Marie Combs. Who always got to me stop and watch for a few minutes when I'd see her character. :-)

The first few pages of this thread give insight into the history of the board for those of us who weren't here back then. I joined the CBR board years ago, but never really got into posting or lurking there. I have a vague idea of reading this entire thread. I wouldn't try to bite it all off at once if I decide to keep reading it.
