Just discovered that there's a Dutch site called picl.nl where you can watch a selection of movies that are currently playing in Dutch arthouse theatres, for which you pay slightly less than if you bought an actual movie ticket. I think it's an interesting concept, but I don't think I'll be making use of it. Part of my enjoyment of going to the theatre is the atmosphere of sitting in the viewing room with other people, as well as watching the movie on a large screen. To me, it's that experience that justifies the ticket prize, and I just wouldn't get that out of what's basically Netflix for the latest arthouse/independent/world cinema movies.
I've also been really getting into the Ghost in the Shell franchise, due to all the buzz surrounding the new live-action film. I had already been familiar with 'Stand Alone Complex' and the 1995 film, but I've just purchased the original manga and saw the recent 'Arise' OVAs. I absolutely adore all of it. At the same time very thought-provoking as well as very entertaining. Whilst much of the discussion on the new live-action movie is centered around the casting of Scarlett Johanssen as Major (Kusanagi), my own thoughts went more to the notion of whether or not it would be a good adaptation of the source material. Each of the anime incarnations of GitS are of themselves adaptations of Masamune Shirow's original manga, and it's interesting to see how each director takes a slightly different approach on interpreting Shirow's settings and characters. I had counted 'Stand Alone Complex' among my top 5 favourite anime series for the longest time, but it's only now that I've begun to fall in love with the franchise as a whole.

How does the animation in the 'Stand Alone Complex' compare to the 1995 movie? And is the look of the animated movies based on the original manga? I never really thought about reading the latter, but maybe I should since I found the animated movie visually amazing but couldn't make much out of the story.

This might just be pride talking, Lego being Danish and all that, but having myself had a bunch of sets over the years and having bought a whole lot more for younger siblings, cousins and nephews I have yet to notice any real problems with missing pieces. Espescially not with Dublo since they are so big. Have you experienced problems with it Prince Hal? I was just being funny... or so I thought, bor. Arh okay! Well the reason is that I have heard people say stuff like this before and I have yet to experience it myself.

You don't play with a kid´s Lego!
You buy your own instead!

I never really thought about reading the latter, but maybe I should since I found the animated movie visually amazing but couldn't make much out of the story. The animation in 'Stand Alone Complex' is quite different from the 1995 movie, but quality-wise I would rate it fairly high. It's the typical difference between a feature film and a TV show. There is some nice integration of CGI into the cell-animation, especially with vehicles. In some shows it looks jarring, but in SAC it fits very well. I would say SAC comes closer to the original manga in terms of art style than Mamuro Oshii's film does, but both have their own stylistic stamp on them. Oshii really did something special with his version of GitS, and many of the visual cues he employed were either original innovations or taken from other sources than the manga. Don't get me wrong, the world created by Shirow in the manga, especially the architecture and the technology, is gorgeously designed and highly detailed; but the visual wow-factor of the movie is very much its own animal. Still, I'd recommend Stand Alone Complex; it presents concepts and themes similar to those in the movie, but with a fair bit more exposition. In 26 episodes, it has plenty of room for exploring its world. And aside from that, it's a nice crime show in a sci-fi setting. EDIT: Forgot to mention, the original manga has a fair couple more light-hearted bits and some oddball humour to it, and SAC follows it in that regard though it's a little bit toned down in that series.

Nothing like waking up early in the morning and finding no internet service, no cable TV service and no home phone service. It was fixed within a few hours but my cat is now puzzled why I spoke so much to her today

It'll be a pain in the tail, but you'd better assemble that Lego kit to make sure all the pieces are there. Don't want the kids to be disapppointed. When the original Batman Lego sets came out, I ended up buying all of them (except a couple of the smaller ones) for my son's birthdays and Christmases. I had a grand total of one missing piece, and I'm not 100% certain I didn't lose it myself.

My brother with the stage 4 throat cancer had to have the port in his chest removed after they found it was infected with staph. Bad enough he has the cancer but now this really has him shaken. He's been admitted for treatment and observation but he's afraid he might not make it through.
He's confiding the full truth in me and his wife, telling me of things he wants me to do when he's gone.
I hate cancer.

I will be thinking of him and I wished that he'll pull all together and all. Please keep us up to date and sorry that you have to endure this.

I can't imagine the anguish you must be feeling, hondobrode. Try to stay strong and don't allow your brother to lose hope. Cancer robbed me of my Godfather last year and it very nearly took my dad as well. Add my hate to your own and don't give up. Sending you good thoughts.
