We got our first real look at Fox's New Mutants movie this week, in the form of a storyboard animatic showing Magik, Wolfsbane, Cannonball, and Dani Moonstar. Plus the Demon Bear.
I am hyped. Magik is my favorite Marvel character, and the Demon Bear saga is considered a classic from when Claremont's X-Men was the best thing around.

Looks good to me! I always liked Wolfsbane myself; she was an enjoyable character, plus I always liked werewolf type of characters as a kid anyway so Wolfsbane worked for me. I never got to read any of the Excaliber stuff mind you, but I did enjoy The New Mutants.

Magik with Lockheed is interesting... as is Magik having her soul sword during the Demon Bear saga.. that'll make it alot easier.
I like the line up, but that makes me think they're not really going to relate it to the comics much. Sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn't.

Magik had the soul sword during the Demon Bear Saga during the comics. That's how she killed it. And the only character in the storyboards who wasn't in the original comic storyline is Lockheed.
Dani injured. The Bear attacking the hospital during a snowstorm. New Mutants trying to defend Dani and the hospital. That's as true to the original Demon Bear Saga as it gets.

Lockheed is a pretty interesting addition. While he did hang out with Magik a lot, he is Kitty Pryde's pet dragon. This could mean that they are changing his origin from space dragon to mystical dragon. Assuming he's in the final movie, he'll probably serve as the comedic relief.

The first trailer:

And we have a real trailer ... and it looks nothing like the animatic. They're going full-on horror and seemingly making a 'superhero movie in a box.' Basically, the New Mutants are teenagers whose powers are just manifesting and are dangerous to themselves and to others as they can't control them yet. It's an interesting premise which is at least different from the rest of the superhero fare, but I can see it backfiring. I can't see Magik being handled correctly in such a setting given her powers. Still some interesting things in the trailer. The baby rattlesnake analogy is apt, and the scenes of younger Magik and Sam with miners show that their comic-origins are at least partially intact. Bill Sienkiewitz, the artist for the most iconic New Mutants comic run, has been a part of the production from the start and seems to love the cast (and said that the Soul Sword is a pratical prop).
It's not the movie I've been dreaming of, but that was likely never going to be made in the first place since I'm not involved in the production in any way. Hopefully the characters and plot shine through with this setup.
And I was just beaten to the punch in posting it.

I've always been kind of meh on the New Mutants as a whole, but I really dug this trailer.

It looks like they turned New Mutants into a generic horror movie.

Seems nothing like the comics but still looks very interesting. I like the horror movie angle, something different. The actresses for Illyanna and Rahne look so much like their comic counterparts! (I guess since Illyana is going to be in it, they are probably dropping the whole Belasco/Limbo storyline...it would be too much back story.)

Boone has stated that New Mutants is intended to be a trilogy, so there's more room to develop backstories. Plus, the trailer clearly shows a younger version of Illyana, so her backstory is definitely being addressed in some fashion. Some have speculated that the monster figure in the mask leaning over her is Belasco. I don't know about that, but it isn't human. Also, Limbo is something which doesn't need that much detail. The mystery can be better kept up by teasing it rather than retelling the whole Magik mini.

What's this? Recognizable human figures?
That doesn't look anything like Bill Sienkiewicz!
Yet another movie adaptation takes a crap all the source material. For shame.
