We'll see. Did they do more reshoots to salvage it? The actors must be two years older now. I see Illyana is already Witchblade in this.

Apparently the reshoots never happened. They never got the cast back together for them. Based off what's been reported it's almost exactly the same movie Boone shot in 2017 and any changes are simply in the editing.

August 28 is almost here! Theaters are still closed in New Jersey, so I was worried they wouldn't open in time. But when AMC announced their August 20 reopenings, I saw that Pennsylvania has theaters opening that are close enough to drive to, especially if I'm driving from my workplace.

The comic-con teaser looks great, the first 2 minute trailer looked largely awful. Still, looking forward to this a whole lot more than I looked forward to Apocalypse or Dark Phoenix - which is damning with faint praise, considering how aful they looked in advance and how awful they were when delivered; I'm actually cautiously optimistic about this one.

Reviews are starting to come out, and they're ... not encouraging. He's one of the more glowing* ones "It's the worst X-Men movie ever, akin to watching a terrible TV pilot for a series that you already know didn't get picked up."
(* as in "glowing in the dark from a nuclear strike")

I saw on Facebook that Bob McLeod isn't happy with the movie. They removed all of the visual elements that he gave the characters, and then they spelled his name wrong in the credits ("MacLeod").

"It's the worst X-Men movie ever" That's quite an accomplishment.

(* as in "glowing in the dark from a nuclear strike") I disagree. I saw it. I like it for what it was, although I could certainly see the flaws in it. That review sounds like basically it's smaller scale, therefore it's bad. For instance, it's definitely way better than X-Men: The Last Stand. I can't see how someone could see those two movies and think New Mutants is the weaker film, unless they're just using scope and budget as proxies for quality. When I mention budget, it's essentially that they don't try to do super-ambituous stuff with, for example, set design. It's not a matter of doing things shoddily. It's a very much a New Mutants movie, in that it's sort of counter-programming. It's the kids. As far as authenticity to the source material, it's mixed. There are some things that I think they really got the essence, but other elements that were changed were unwelcome departures.

I saw on Facebook that Bob McLeod isn't happy with the movie. They removed all of the visual elements that he gave the characters, and then they spelled his name wrong in the credits ("MacLeod"). I noticed the spelling thing, because I also sit through the credits. Inexcusable, and it's all the more galling since they spelled Sienkiewicz right. They just couldn't be bothered to spell McLeod's name right. On the visuals, I sort of disagree with him. The New Mutants is pretty much within the normal comic adaptation variance between how characters appear in print and on film. Rahne has a pixie cut, and I think it's within reason to go with a more realistic cut than try to simulate her particular hairdo. Might end with an ugly wig. The one appearance change that did bother me is Berto. The actor is Brazilian, but he appears mestizo (or whatever the Brazilian equivalent to that term is) rather than Afro-Brazilian. I think that's an element that one should try to avoid changing. Also, the actor is tall, and I think of Berto being short as a key part of how his depiction and does affect how he interacts with people. But of course, the tall guy who played Wolverine is now beloved by fans.

As a fan of the characters, particularly Magik, it was a big disappointment for me. Most of the changes to the characters' backstories were for the worse, to the point where Illyana is the same character in name only. She has more in common with the comics version of the Scarlett Witch over the last 20 years than she does with any comics incarnation of Magik. Mostly they failed at giving the characters much to do and Dani dominated the movie like she was Wolverine when she had no business doing so.
The mystery was incredibly weak since the big twist was pretty much revealed back when the first trailer came out in 2017. The horror scenes weren't scary in part because they were all revealed in trailers already. The smiley men at least could have been scary if we hadn't seen so much of them beforehand. And the final act really dropped the ball, especially the final resolution which is one of the worst endings to a superhero movie I've ever seen.
Comparing it to X-3, that was Magneto's best performance as a villain in the franchise, some really deep philosophical issues with no easy answers, Kelsey Graham as Beast, and a lot of really good action scenes. This had atmosphere and a somewhat intriguing first act, and a couple of cool action scenes specifically involving Magik at the very end, but that's about it for positives. X-3 could be salvaged by removing the phoenix subplot and devoting that time to the cure and angel plotlines. This needed a complete rewrite of pretty much everything after the first 2 scenes.
