I bought the DVD yesterday, and the film was pretty decent. Not the best I’ve seen, but far from the worst. It was very much in the tradition of The Fifth Element (for obvious reasons).
I’m not sure I would have wanted it to be the start of franchise, but the bad reception it got strikes me as completely unwarranted.
I wish the characters had been truer to their comic-book selves, but a casual movie-goer wouldn’t have known about such things... so it was simply a honest sci-fi/fantasy action flick, with an added dose of quirky exoticism.
I had the same reaction toward the John Carter movie.

I didn't grow up reading the BD and had read only a few stories shortly before the film came out so it isn't a matter of nostalgia with me, but I agree, it would have been much better had they stayed closer to the characters as they were written in the comics, especially Valerian - not only the individual personalities but the relationship between the two.
To put this another way, the problem isn't just that they changed the characters from what they were in the comics, it's more that the movie characters - again, I'd say mostly Valerian - were weak and ill-conceived in themselves. In other words, even if this had been a brand new story not based on any pre-existing series or anything at all, I would have disliked Valerian as a character - which then also spoiled Laureline by having her be subordinate and, even worse, attracted to such an obnoxious goof (otherwise I thought she was fine, the actress was well cast and did a good job).
I strongly disagree about John Carter, but you already know that.
