Are you an anime watcher? I certainly am a sucker for such Japanese goodness in animation. From the earliest days of Speed Racer dubbed for Saturday mornings, to the late 70's boom with Voltron, Battle of the Planets (i.e.: G-Force), Dragonball, Thundercats (yes it is American but drawn by Japanese studio) and so many others and then the renewed interest with Robotech, Pokemon and Yugi-Oh and their cousins so these cartoons captured my imagination taking me to new worlds and delights.
During high school i was part of a local Japanimation club: there were a couple of kids whose brothers were in the military and stationed in Japan and they would send home recorded Japanese VHS tapes. We would sit for hours on weekends watching these tapes over and over in their original language, undubbed as we tried to figure out the stories and/or made up our own versions of the stories. Then in the 80's comes the comic book shop and lo and behold many crossed over into the Japanimation with VHS then DVD's of new found joy with movies and long running series. Many we would rent as buying them as imports was too costly.
I had a new addiction. Over the years with the advent of affordable DVD releases it became easy to buy and immerse myself in these spectacular science fiction, fantasy, horror, adventure and comedy wonders.
Now i have a love for giant robots and monsters based upon the evidence of my collection. Voltron, Gundam, Robotech, Aquarion, Escaflowne, Heroic Age, Saber Rider and so forth. I have collected all of the various Yugi-Oh battle card series. Many vampire series. I have many Dragonball series. i order every new One Piece DVD as they are sold. My shelf is lined with so much Japanese animation and yet i still browse Amazon and the used/trading stores in town to further my video addiction to the japanese animation i have become so enamored of. Each week i have at least one anime series i am watching along with my other DVD shows.
So what all do you watch and if wish to review and talk about here? Show me your anime love and addiction so we may all enjoy knowing we are not alone...

I just read some Astro Boy yesterday... does that count? Great stuff.
I do have Season 2 of Assassination Classroom on my list.. it's weird and VERY anime concept wise, but strangely compelling.
I also relatively recently watched the first 7 or 8 episodes of Psycho Pass... cool concept, but introducing a main villain didn't work for me... I'd prefer the show went longer doing villain of the month while showing us more aspects of their particular future vision.

I'm not a huge fan of anime, the genre, per se, but I am a huge fan of the various mecha/robot shows that have been a staple of anime, esp. classic ones from the 80s and 90s. I'm a big fan of the Macross franchise, having been introduced by way of Robotech, and I've watched and enjoyed most of the various sequel series that have aired since Super Dimensional Fortress Macross. I've also been a fan of MOSPEADA (a.k.a. Robotech New Generation), Mobile Suit Gundam, Bubblegum Crisis, and the various super robot shows like Golion, Dairugger (a.k.a. Lion Voltron and Vehicle Voltron), Mazinger, etc. I also collect transforming robot figures, mostly Macross Valkyries and Masterpiece Transformers.

Calling 'Anime' a genre is almost like calling 'movies' a genre. Other than the fact that they are both drawn and originate from Japan, there is really nothing else that, say, Sailor Moon or Glitter Force have in common with the giant robot themed shows you like, which have just as little in common with something like One Piece or Naruto. I'm just throwing that out there because I feel like a lot of people have bad stereotypes of Anime, and it makes me sad .

Yeah, I get that, I was mainly trying not to appear as if I'm a fan of something when I don't really know much about it. I like robot anime, but I know almost next to nothing about any of the other programs that Netflix lists under the heading of anime. My experience has been that a lot of people who describe themselves as fans of anime tend to have tastes a bit more diverse than mine. They may like Gundam, but they also like Dragonball Z or Space Captain Harlock. Whereas I pretty much don't have much interest unless it involves mechanical suits or giant robots.

Over the years i have noticed a trend towards elitism in the fans. Even to the point of rudeness and putting down others for either NOT watching what the "in crowd" is or for watching older anime or watching what you like and others don't. To me ALL anime is out there for whatever taste, style or concepts you wish to watch and enjoy. I love my Speed Racer and Astroboy just as much as my Robotech, Gundam and Yugi-Oh and wish everyone could respect and encourage watching other shows that you might not consider. There is something for everyone just like in comics. No need to disparage others. This is why i joined this site in particular for the adult and polite communication and discussions.

Yeah, I know what you're saying. My daughter and her buddies are like that a bit. I here them say 'you haven't watched xxxx show yet??' alot, while many of them scoff at the classics until they actually watch them.
Then there's the people that think all of anime is girls with big eyes and bigger breasts and don't realize there's some great, thought provoking stuff out there, as well as some great period pieces. Much like some people scoff at comics, really.
Also, how could anyone not like Astro Boy?

I managed to pick up the Complete Astro Boy 2003 tv series of 50 episodes for $5 at Wal-Mart back before Halloween and am only just now watching the 1st disc. Sure is some magnificent animation in this version to enjoy. Splendid fusion of Japanese/American that is pretty too watch and fun as well.

I have one DVD I snagged in a bargain bin a few months ago for .99 that was awesome I suspect it's probably part of that series. Very good, clean art and always fun. straight forward stories that often have a strong, thought provoking aspect.

Never been much of a fan myself, although I did own a copy of Vampire Hunter D on VHS that got a lot of use back in the day.

Never been a big anime fan, but I remember my brother and I used to rent 'Ninja Scroll' all the time in the early 90's.
And I'm sure I would've watched the hell out of a show like Dragon Ball Z if I had grown up with it.

Good as Dragonball Z is, the re-edited Dragonball Z-Kai is better in my own opinion. They removed most of the distracting extraneous side stories so it is full on testosterone driven martial arts fighting. The series moves along much quicker and smoothly this way and is pure pleasure with a punch

Maybe that had to do with the "side stories", but it never made any sense to me.

Goku is pretty much the reigning Heavyweight Title holder and villains from across the universe seek him out or want to take over or destroy earth. Goku's friends fight the good fight but are always outclassed so it leaves Vegeta, Goku and their son's as the last Sayain's to save the day. Vegeta always comes out second best to Goku and with every fight Goku keeps evolving/increasing his fighting skills/powers and wins the day. Rinse and Repeat endlessly basically for each villain that arrives. The fun of the series is the character interactions and the fights keeping on amping it up.
