Bought the Flintstones after hearing so many rave reviews about it. Read it last weekend and so far all reviews seem to be right, I really enjoyed this. It's so great, isn't it?

I'm working on filling in some of the holes in some of the more recent titles I've collected, including a few titles I was reading in 2013 when I stopped reading comics for a while. So in addition to Untold Legend of the Batman #1 and #2 (which I will discuss on the Batman Thread when I've read them), I got: Dejah Thoris #30 and #36 - I only have one more issue and I'll have the whole series! It's so ridiculous, but I love it. Not just the Carlos Rafael art and the semi-Burroughsian adventure, but also the surreal imagery of Dejah Thoris, the princess of Mars, running around in attire made of dental floss, wearing impractical and uncomfortable looking footwear, participating in the government business of the City of Helium and going on archaeological expeditions and whatever. Beyond the cheesecake, it's a wonderful combination of a lot of things I like in crazy comic books. Catwoman (New 52) #23, #26 and #30 - I read the first 18 issues of New 52 Catwoman and thought it was merely OK, but I stuck with it for a while, hoping it would get better. After I quit getting it, I heard that Selina became a major Gotham crime boss starting about #35 or so, and that it was pretty good. So I got all those issues, and while I was doing that, I ended up with just enough issues in the #19 to #34 era that I just decided to get the whole series. And it's pretty spotty. Sometimes I read the issues and lay it down and go "Do I really need this entire series?" And other times, it's kind of fun, if frequently kind of stupid. I'm still missing #31, #32 and #34. The other recent series I'm working on is New 52 Birds of Prey, which, so far, looks to me like it got pretty bad after #20 or so. And as I liked World War Tank Girl #2 and Cerebus in Hell #4 a lot, I've added the issues I missed to my list.

Trying to download my Usagi Yojimbo Saga collections, in the next step of reading the excellent series, kept getting cut of at my parents' farm. Going to take my iPad with me to the library and use their better faster connection to download what I'm needing. In the meantime, as I was cruising my Dark Horse digital account, I came across Black Hammer # 1-5 that I hadn't read yet. Jeff Lemire, one of the freshest writers, a very safe bet, and Dean Ormston, who's work on Judge Dredd and the Vertigo line, is solid as well. The premise : a set of aliens somehow ejected from their world / dimension and trapped in ours, on a small farm. They were all superheroes and are now adjusting / coping / struggling with their new status and the interactions between themselves. Here's the solicit for the initial arc, Secret Origins : Once they were heroes, but the age of heroes has long since passed. Banished from existence by a multiversal crisis, the old champions of Spiral City--Abraham Slam, Golden Gail, Colonel Weird, Madame Dragonfly, and Barbalien--now lead simple lives in an idyllic, timeless farming village from which there is no escape! But as they employ all of their super abilities to free themselves from this strange purgatory, a mysterious stranger works to bring them back into action for one last adventure! Looking forward to picking up the final issue and reading it tonight. This immediately goes to my short list of current reads.

I took advange of the Image sale currently going on on comixology. Bought a whole bunch of issues of newer series that I am behind on and stuff that I am reading in digital TP whenever there is a sale. For single issues that means 0,63 € pr. Issue. A price I am completely okay with paying for a digital issue. The normal 2,99-3,99 pr issue I think is to much, with a very few exceptions, but at the sale price thats completely okay with me. Stuff I bough includes vol. 2-5 of Chew, 3 trades of savage dragon, several issues of wicked and dive, moonshine, saga and dream police.

Amazon have a huge sale on Marvel Comics on Kindle at the moment. Once I learned I could read these through my Comixology account, I snapped up all of The Original Writer's Miracleman run for just under US$10, because they're not available on Marvel Unlimited, and I think spreading out 16 issues over 3 HCs is taking the piss.

Just picked up the third (and final) volume of the recent Paul Levits Sonny Liew Doctor Fate series. I read the first 2 volumes while on the mend, but hadn't gotten around to picking up volume 3 yet, but a little Amazon credit took care of that, and it was in my mailbox when I got home from work today.

Picked up some modern stuff and small press stuff today while at the Super Fly 10th anniversary sale. Dirk Manning and my old pals at Twilight Star Studios were set up doing signings at the show. I picked up some classic collections (Akira Vol. 1, Usagi from Fantagraphics Vol. 4, 6, 7, pics in Classic section) as well. As for newer mainstream stuff, I picked up... Future Quest Presents Space Ghost #1... and The Wicked + The Divine Vol. 2 From Twilight Star I picked up the following... Challis #1 and the Necrotrancer ashcan... and the oversized edition of the Heroes & Villains coloring book they did.... plus Amy got her comp copy of the Renegade Edition of the coloring book as it contained one of her drawings to color.... From Dirk Manning I picked up a pair of books... Nightmare World Vol. 1 (a horror anthology) and Write or Wrong his guide to writing comics as an indy creator... both were signed by Dirk (whom I suspect might be an agent of Cthulhu for some reason)... Amy might be taking on some more coloring jobs for TSS and Dirk quite liked her artwork as well, so hopefully I can get her back on the horse and doing more creative stuff again, which would be the best possible outcome of today as far as I am concerned. All in all a good day. Amy's knee was bothering her so we didn't stay for the live music shows going on later this afternoon/evening, but I may head back out if I finish up enough house projects this afternoon and still have the energy to drive over. -M

If you've ever met Dirk Manning, you might know what he looks like, if not, he is the man of mystery... Who knows what horrors he hides behind the books or scarves... It's a fun little shtick he cooked up to add to the ambiance of his appearances, but he really is a great guy, and mostly normal...mostly. -M

There was a sale at the LCS and I bought Bullseye: The Colombian Connection, the 2nd of the Lemire/Smallwood Moon Knights, and The Old Guard, by Rucka and Fernandez. The last was an impulse buy - I hadn't heard of it before but the art looked pretty good and the scenario (immortal soldiers) is one that I like the idea of.

So today was our annual Labor Day pilgrimage to Half Price Books, as we drove out to Columbus to hit a couple of HPB locations among other things. Took a truckload of paperbacks to trade in as we are cleaming off shelves and purging stuff, and I ended up getting some modern stuff and some classic stuff. Modern stuff here, classic stuff over in the classic forum... This series was due to start just as I got sick, so I missed it, but picked up the first 3 issues out of the dollar bins at HPB... I love PCR's adaptations of Gaiman stuff, so I was hyped to see this. Several folks around her mentioned Bug The Adventures of Forager as something to check out, so I grabbed the first issue out of the dollar bin and found a Paul Grist comic I had never heard of/seen before, I love Jack Staff and Kane, so decided to try this for a buck... I also found 3 issues of The Kamandi Challenge that I missed while recovering from surgery in the dollar bins... and the last modern dollar bin find was The Island #1 Image's magazine sized anthology that was severely under-ordered in shops around here, so I was surprised to see it inthe wild, and delighted to get the $8 comic for a buck... and in the trade department, I snagged a copy of Tom King's Omega Men and the third volume of Wicked + Divine So lots of nifty modern stuff to check out. Plus all the cool classic stuff I got. -M
