The 'ugly' guitar is meant to look like the head of an alien, as in grey mushroom hued with black almond eyes. My Dad swears by his Gibson Hummingbird.

Yeah, I get what they we're going for, but ewww! Can't go wrong with a Hummingbird. It's a classic. One of my best mates has one and it sounds and plays lovely.

My kind of guitar: Guild make lovely acoustics, but I've never tried any of their electric guitars. Myself, I'd really love a Guild 12-string acoustic...preferably the F212, with double scratch plate, like Tim Buckley played...

I know Barry Tashian of The Remains played an electric Guild at least some times. Not sure if he recorded with it or not. Whatever he used on classic '60s cuts like Why Do I Cry sounds great!

Most listened to song of 2018
#96 - "Handle With Care" - The Traveling Wilburys.
This is a combo of the death of Tom Petty late last year and the fact that the Wilburys are 1B in the best supergroup of all time (The Highwaymen are 1A).
Beyond that, this is just a great track that give a little peak at each of the Wilburys and has just some beautiful work by Roy Orbison.
This actually takes the place of a track off Jim Lauderdale's newest album. And that's a function of how Spotify worked in this case. The preceding track is in my top ten...and runover put a decent but unspectacular song in this spot. I know this one deserved to be here...or probably higher.

Most listened to songs of 2018
#95 -"Paradise" - John Prine.
This is part of my "screw capitalism" sub-set that gets pulled out when I'm feeling particularly cynical. It will be joined later on by a song written by Steve Earle and performed by Levon Helm and one written by Woody Guthrie and performed by Ramblin' Jack Elliot.
I'm hot and cold on Prine. He does a lot of stuff that's gold...and a lot that just doesn't work for me. But this song is definitely gold.

#94 -"The Burden of Sea Captains" - The Good Luck Thrift Store Outfit
I have no idea how I missed this song and this album over the years since 2009. But that's the cool thing about the interwebs...it makes it easier to find cool stuff after the fact.
This one came up on my "Discovery" feed on Spotify and it got some significant listening time. Compelling alt-county/roots rock song.

#93 - "The 'In' Crowd" - The Ramsey Lewis Trio.
There's the old canard that if someone has only one jazz album it's probably Kind of Blue. If they have a second it's probably Time Out. A third has a good chance of being the album from which this cut came, which was on the pop charts for almost a full year.
This is just one of those songs that gets my head bobbing and my feet taping. Lewis is a great pianist, but the real thrill (especially if you dig deeper in the album) is bassist Eldee Young.

#92 - "Rave On" - Buddy Holly
It never ceases to amaze me that Holly didn't write this song. The opening with the drawn-out we-eee-ell is quintessential Holly. At 1 minute and 54 seconds this song packs far more punch than songs three and four times its length.

I'm a huge Buddy Holly fan, though this is the only song that made my list, oddly enough. My Dad was a big fan of Holly as well. Dad was 19-21 when Holly was at his peak. This song is just seminal 50s rock & roll.

I saw some tv doc recently with Brian May of Queen playing old Buddy sides and marveling at them and explaining what he hears in them. It was pretty interesting. There have been some other great documentaries with his brother and widow participating plus people on that Winter Dance Party tour from hell. The Crickets were kind of the template for The Beatles and Buddy's recordings were huge in England well into the time of The Beatles' reign. My Dad was more of a Hank Williams and Gene Vincent fan (and Johnny Burnette's Rock & Roll Trio).
Also Buddy was one of the first to record and perform with Fender guitars (Ritchie Valens used them sometimes too and was a friend of Dick Dale who really put Fenders on the map).

Most listened to songs of 2018
#91 - "Johnson's Love" - Dwight Yoakam
This is a bit of a deep album cut. This was never released as a single. You can argue that it's maybe only the fifth or sixth best track on the album "Hillbilly Deluxe" (I wouldn't, but you could). On the other hand...that's a fantastic album.
This one shows that Dwight is a damn fine song-writer and is able to turn a phrase with the best of them.
"I hear'd the preacher at the service Say from love he's finally free But I say love it knows no season It haunts the soul eternally"

I remember that song from that album, we had it when it came out. Dwight was one of those artists you could listen to an entire album without skipping any tracks.
