Certainly the Marvel formula was more successful - Well, sort of, I've read that comic sales in general went down something like 70% from their peak in the '50s to the '70s* - and I'd agree that the best of Marvel's Silver Age hero books were better than the best of DC's. (DC dominated pretty much every other genre, though! Certainly the DC war books were more adult than anything published by Marvel.) From the 50's to the 70's the entire comic book genre was under attack by Wertham and all the books were struggling. It looks like comics go up and down in cycles , but I do remember reading that, when Roy Thomas was able to get the license to publish Star Wars comics, it saved Marvel.
