One of my favorite runs on Daredevil is (IMO) overlooked & under rated. It returned DD to more light hearted adventures for 12 issues. It was by Karl Kesel & Cary Nord. It ran from #353-365 then Joe Kelly & Gene Colan (& Ariel Olivetti) took over until #375.
Script by Karl Kesel. Art & cover by Cary Nord & Matt Ryan. The first page is an awesome closeup of DD's face. DD stops a double suicide attempt. Cut to Foggy in the courtroom in the case of "Bart vs Hill". (Bart Hill was the Lev Gleason Daredevil). Matt appears & in a quick recap Kesel sets up a new status quo. He explains his "death" was faked by SHIELD to protect him after he took down the Kingpin. We get a cameo of Lois Lane calling in the story & a reference to Matt's "twin brother". Back at their offices Foggy tells Matt he knows he is DD. Matt finally explains to Foggy the extent of his powers. They get a call from a high profile lawyer named Rosalind Sharpe who would like to meet with them. This freaks Foggy out for an unknown reason. Back at Matt & Karen's apt both of them talk of the "dark times" they both went thru. Later DD goes on patrol & finds Mr Hyde tearing up a warehouse. DD finds a dead 16 yr old girl in the warehouse & subdues Hyde as the police arrive. Hyde maintains he is innocent & did not kill the girl. Later Foggy & Matt meet Rosalind who offers them to be partners with her in her law practice. Foggy accepts. Matt declines. However Sharpe makes it clear she will only take Foggy if Matt agrees.

I had not read DD in years but I liked Kesel's style so I picked this issue up. I LOVED it. Matt was happy again. Foggy & Karen were a big part of the cast. I was intrigued by Rosalind Sharpe. I also wondered where Kesel was going with the Mr Hyde story. I had not seen Nord's art before but I liked his clean style on the title.

I remember liking this run quite a bit when it came out, but I haven't revisited it in years, and I no longer have those issues. I like the Kelly/Colan run that followed as well, but thought the Kesel/Nord run was better. I agree it is often overlooed and underrated, especially by those who think there was nothing worthwhile in DD between Miller and Bendis.

Never read this run. I wish that this & the other post-Frank Miller DD issues (in DD Volume #1) would get reprinted in the Epic collection; these runs have been severely under-represented when it comes to collected editions....

Script by Karl Kesel. Art & cover by Cary Nord & Matt Ryan. Rick Leonardi (p. 7-10, 22). Daredevil stops in their law office to talk to Foggy about Rosalind. Liz Osborn stops by to go to lunch with Foggy. Liz had been a client of Foggy's & they have an interest in each other. DD leaves to have lunch with Karen at an outdoor cafe. Kesel writes witty but "real" dialog between the two of them. While there Ben Urich & Peter Parker walk by & greet them. Right at that moment Spider-Man swings by & Matt leaves to catch him as DD. DD confronts Spider-Man & in ONE panel Kesel explains the Clone Saga. DD accepts Ben as Spidey & explains also in ONE panel his faked death & different costumes recently. Then Spidey & DD hear a gunshot & confront The Shooter! He said he wants to get a rep by killing the guy who gave the Kingpin so much trouble. Spidey is offended & says the Kingpin was his villain first. Of course they take down the shooter. A lot of witty banter between the two of them. Spidey calls DD despicable. DD says he likes that description since Spidey took all the good ones like amazing & spectacular. Later Matt goes to Rosalind's office & agrees to be a partner. Kesel's dialog is perfect between the two of them. Rosalind then tells Matt the first client he will represent as part of Sharpe, Murdock & Nelson... Mr Hyde!

What a great issue! Kesel & Nord do an excellent job showing Matt enjoying being Daredevil. Kesel writes great dialog. It reads like a normal conversation between people. He nails all the characters unique voices. I also loved the verbal sparring between Rosalind Sharpe & Matt. I also loved how he summarized all that happened in the Clone Saga & in previous issues of DD in TWO panels!
Nord's DD is built like a gymnast. That is how I picture DD's physique would be with his agility & abilities. His art conveys motion. He also is great at drawing people in normal clothing. A skill many modern artists lack.
First page showing Nord's DD with a gymnast's muscular build:
I was wondering what Kesel was doing with Hyde. That last page was a bombshell!

md62Off to a great start and this is one Daredevil Run that I did not read at all and what you have written so far is very informative and fascinating ... I agree with you on the art of Nord's and I did not see much of it until now and I can safely say this you are right on the nose about his skill as an artist. Thanks for putting this together.

Cover art by Cary Nord. Script by Karl Kesel. Pencils by Cary Nord and Steve Epting (p. 5-9), inks by Matt Ryan. The issue starts with Matt meeting with Mr Hyde over the death of Angela Parrish. When Matt asks Hyde if he killed her he says no. Matt is shocked that Hyde's heartbeat stays constant. Matt returns to their old office & vents to Foggy & Karen about what Rosalind wants him to do. He is enraged that he would have to defend Hyde. Kesel & Epting sell this scene! Then Matt goes out as DD to look into things further. He finds Pyro at the warehouse where Angela died burning it down. After fighting DD confronts Pyro & asked him why Hyde hired him to destroy the warehouse. Pyro tells DD Hyde did not hire him, someone else did! Then Pryo tries to kill both of them. Pyro is dying anyway from the Legacy virus which at that time was killing mutants. DD escapes into the water below the dockside warehouse. As Matt he goes to tell Rosalind he will defend Hyde. He states Hyde deserves to rot in jail but not for a crime he didn't commit.

Kesel really sells the emotions in this book. Hyde wanting Murdock to defend him because of his reputation as a lawyer. Matt's rage. Matt's sense of justice. Karen's support. I don't know why Nord needed help this arc with art. After a fill in issue in #358 he does the full art in the issues after that. He was probably put on the book with very little lead time. Despite this his art is stellar.
Kesel weaves a complicated plot. Who killed Angela? How is Hyde involved? What is the deal with Rosalind? What are her motives? He makes Matt's personal life just as compelling as his time spent as DD. I wish more DD writers would read this arc to learn how to write DD than trying to copy Miller (whose run I also liked) or Bendis (no comment).
