The conclusion of the first story arc. Kesel did a fantastic job setting up a new status quo for Matt & Foggy with the introduction of Rosalind Sharpe. He also had Matt face a moral dilemma defending Hyde. He also wrote a mystery & threw in some humor as well. His pacing was flawless. And his dialog felt real. I also think his solutions are brilliant. You can see Nord developing as an artist as the story progresses. Wait until you see his growth as we go along. It's pretty cool.

I did managed to get a hold of a friend who have the Kesel/Nord Daredevil and he has copies of it and I'll be borrowing it in a week from now and told me to keep this until I'm done with it. No charge and additional expense he has reading copies of this book and I was happy to get this from him.
I will be picking it up at the Comic Book Store a week from today.

Cover art by Cary Nord. Script by Karl Kesel. Pencils by Cary Nord, inks by Matt Ryan. Matt goes out as DD. Stops a robbery. One of them gets away driving a taxi. DD grabs a skating board from a skateboarder standing near by. He attaches his billy club line to the bumper as the taxi takes off. Cut to Karen at her job at radio WFSK. Callers are discussing DD now that the Avengers & FF are missing (because of Onslaught/Heroes Reborn). One caller thinks DD was a mobster that was killed & was allowed to come back because of a bet he made with the devil. DD finally manages to get to the taxi & flips onto the roof & stops the driver. The next caller asks about his sidekicks the Lil Wise Guys (Lev Gleason 40's Daredevil). Then another caller thinks his mask covers his eyes because he has insect eyes and can see better than anyone. Hyde calls in & complains that DD is always watching him. Another caller thinks DD is really the actual devil. While waiting for the police DD hears a radio & listens to Paige Angel's show & recognizes Karen's voice. As Foggy arrives at his apt with his Mom his phone rings. Rosalind is on the other end & she connects him into Karen's program & tells him to talk about DD... Foggy states he is a good man that has treated him as an equal over the years. Then a Mike calls in & asks Karen what she thinks of DD. She states he has saved her life multiple times. He probably has saved 1/2 NYC's lives at one time. Then she alludes to her past & says sometimes who you were gets in the way of doing good now. Mike (DD) states DD is blind...blind to what people think about him. He agrees with her "Who you are doesn't matter as much as what you do". Karen realizes the caller Mike is Matt. Then DD hangs up feeling euphoric. On his way home he comes across...the Absorbing Man!

Kesel stated in an interview a year later that this was his favorite issue of his run. He loved Cary's art, he liked exploring what the public would think about DD. He liked returning fun back into DD's title.
He alludes to the 40's Lev Gleason DD again. I wish at some point there could have been a team up between the two. The scene with DD on the skateboard was a bit over the top but overall I really liked this issue. It was mostly an interlude between the Hyde arc & the next arc. Some of my favorite issues over the years have been this "a day in the life" style of story. As I said before Nord draws "normal" people well. That skill was needed this issue since other than the last page the issue was all normal people. Speaking of the last page...how is DD going to defeat the Absorbing Man?

Oh, this sounds like so much fun in hearing differing public views of the who and why of DD. Some nice throwback touches by Kesel (Matt calling in as Mike?!) and he raises some obvious points. How come no has noticed and/or wondered why DD's mask covers his eyes? It's playing with perceptions which is always interesting. So this is where Karen acquired her radio talk show. Having read Smith, I knew she was on-air personality but till now, didn't know when she became such. It sounds like a different and unique approach for her character. Yeah, great job with the reviews. I'm gonna have to track down these issues now.

Cover art by Cary Nord. Script by Karl Kesel. Pencils by Cary Nord, inks by Matt Ryan. As DD fights the Absorbing Man Karen goes to his office to talk to Matt. She runs into Rosalind who wonders why Karen puts up with Matt's disappearances. Karen & Rosalind walk into the office to find Foggy giving his Mom Anna Nelson a tour. Karen introduces herself & says so your Foggy's Mom? Rosalind states "Hardly Karen. This is merely my ex-husband's second wife. Mrs Nelson most certainly isn't MY son's mother". The office gets caught in the crossfire between Rosalind & Anna arguing. Then the press calls asking for a statement from DD's friend Foggy Nelson about DD's fight with the Absorbing Man. Meanwhile the Absorbing Man keeps changing from brick to steel to hot coals then diamond. DD uses his radar sense to find the flaws in Absorbing Man's diamond form & hits those areas with a policeman's gun causing the Absorbing Man to chip away in pieces. The police take him away & DD goes home to recover. Karen tells him that Rosalind is Foggy's Mom. Matt says nothing surprises him anymore. Karen tells Matt he looks like hell. He says that's how a devil should look. And the issue ends on a happy note.

Wow what a revelation about Rosalind! I loved the dynamic & tension this caused. This issue was about the supporting cast. The story with the Absorbing Man was only a small part. This issue flowed naturally from last issue. The way Rosalind viewed Matt was interesting. Again Kesel writes realistic dialog. The last few pages with Karen & Matt were amazing. I am a fan of heroes having something in their life that anchors them & makes them happy. Constant tragedy becomes a cliché.
After the Smith/Quesada Guardian Devil arc I don't think Rosalind Sharpe ever appeared again.
Next: The Black Widow.

I read a lot of this run when I came out and enjoyed it a lot. One thing that made "Born Again" so great was Karen Page's redemption arc. I liked that the Kesel run treated Karen well. She deserved that after the Nocenti run largely flushed the Matt/Karen reunification down the toilet.

This was a good run, if a bit short. It does get overshadowed a lot by the longer runs of other creators. After Miller, the 80s and 90s were kind of a hit-or-miss period for DD, IMO. Ann Nocenti had a lengthy run that had some good moments, but was mostly just OK. Same for DG Chichester (though I seem to remember him writing one issue in the early 300s that was a done-in-one "day in the life" type of story which I quite enjoyed). The best part of both their runs was Lee Weeks on art. I dropped out of DD after that and didn't pick up again until the vol. 2 era, but I picked up the Kesel issues from a $1 back issue bin a while back and remember enjoying them quite a bit.

As per usual, these reviews make me want to read this run.
I know I have some of them as I half-heartedly worked on a pre-Kevin Smith run for a little bit. I remember buying #359 off the racks.

Script by Karl Kesel. Art & cover by Cary Nord and Matt Ryan. DD heads for WFSK. He goes into a storage closet & changes clothes. Out walks Matt to meet Karen. He runs into two employees who are nervous to find out he is a lawyer. Matt takes Karen on a carriage ride on his way to work. Outside their law offices the press is asking Foggy about DD's stance on mutants. Rosalind is dismayed when Matt voices a pro-mutant stance to the press. Inside the offices Mark Raxton the Molten Man waits to talk to Foggy. He wants Foggy to ask DD to look into recent thefts at Osborn Chemicals. Rosalind assures Mark that Foggy will contact DD which ticks off Matt. Later DD goes to investigate Osborn Chemicals because he wants to keep Foggy on Rosalind's good side. Inside he finds the Grey Gargoyle fighting the Black Widow. After the GG is subdued by being encased in concrete DD is troubled that Black Widow almost kills Grey Gargoyle. BW is angry that most of the Avengers are gone after Onslaught & vows to start tracking down villains. Matt returns to the office to find Foggy has bought Matt a retired police dog. Foggy has named him Deuce the Devil Dog!

Kesel really did an awesome job describing how it feels to be DD. His thoughts as he leaps off a building: "This is the best part about being a super-hero. Suspended in the air for a split second. A feeling of absolute certainty that I am doing the right thing. That no matter what happens I'll fight the good fight & try to leave this place a little better than I found it". Kesel also shows Matt's backbone at standing up to Rosalind despite her threats about Matt's pro-mutant views & DD not working for her benefit. I also love the little touches like the carriage ride that keeps Matt & Karen's brief moments together special. He also adds humor with the introduction of Deuce. Kesel & Nord are on fire at this point in their collaboration. Next: More Secrets Revealed.

Cover art by Cary Nord. Script by Karl Kesel. Pencils by Cary Nord. Inks by Matt Ryan, Al Milgrom, and Hilary Barta. Matt wakes up from a dream about Black Widow. Liz & Normie are visiting Foggy at his office. Deuce is also there. Matt & Karen arrive. Rosalind talks privately with Foggy. She is ecstatic with the free publicity their firm is getting with the revelation that Foggy is DD's best friend. Rosalind thinks Foggy should dump Liz & date someone more high profile. A man shows up with a message for Rosalind from a Billy Grippo. He pulls out a gun & starts shooting. Deuce jumps up & stops him. Matt changes to DD & subdues the shooter. Then Karen & Rosalind go out to lunch. Meanwhile Foggy & Matt do some investigative work & find a connection between Rosalind & Billy Grippo. All of her cases in her first five years were connected to Grippo. DD finds Rosalind at the hospital where Grippo is dieing from a heart condition. DD grabs her as she leaves. He finds out she has been bluffing Grippo all these years. She has led Grippo to think that she has incriminating evidence on him. However when DD confronts Grippo he finds out Grippo had a soft spot for Rosalind. He sent the shooter to her office knowing it was the only way she would see him (Grippo) again before he dies.
