Another trailer out for Dark Phoenix - my gut reaction was "that looks really, really awful" I try really really hard not to judge a film by its trailer, but yeah. Absolutely everything about this looks terrible. And I have really high hopes for this film. Oh well.

Jessica Chastain's silver-haired character is "Smith." Is this some Emma Frost stand-in, since they already used Emma in First Class? (And also previously in X-Men Origins: Wolverine)
I have low expectations for this film since they haven't set up Jean properly in the last three films, in which she should have been the vivacious girl that everyone loves, instead of... not. The trailer did not challenge my low expectations but also did not deflate them further. At least it looks to be more character driven than the mind control plot from X-Men: Apocalypse. However, "The Gifted" TV show is stealing the thunder from this movie by telling the story of Dark Phoenix better, using Fenris. And of course Buffy did it so well years ago with Dark Willow.

I l-o-o-o-o-o-ove Buffy, but Dark Willow was one of the very weakest plot elements in the whole thing.
Are they going for a horror movie/excorsist vibe? I always thought that would be a neat approach, and it's probably a good thing to have one strong central character in these things.
Also: NEW PROFESSOR X!!! AHHH!! I CAN'T EVEN DEAL!!!

That was one convincing Patrick Stewart impression by McAvoy, I must say!

I love Buffy, yet I think the sixth and seventh seasons mostly sucked. I don't think I've seen much of the latter part of the seventh season; I just lost interest. Do you mean new footage of Professor X? James McAvoy has been in the role for a while. I'm worried. I hope they do a good job with Dark Phoenix, because two cinematic versions of the story already probably won't try it again when they take control of the X-Men films.

It looks radically different than the comic book story...but in and of itself I didn't see anything terrible.

Not all the X-men films - X-Men 1 was largely awful, 2 was pretty good, 3 was a terrible mishmash with some good bits, First Class was good with a stupid villain/villain's plot, DoFP was pretty good, AoA was a car crash, and from the trailers this one looks dreadful, but could of course surprise us. For completeness: X-Men Origins: Wolverine was so bad it could have been a DC film, Wolverine 2 was decent apart from the 3rd act which was terrible; Logan was mostly excellent, as was Deadpool 1. Deadpool 2 was OK
But I am intrigued to see what Marvel will do with them, even though I haven't been wildly thrilled with most of the Phase 3 films

X-Men Origins: Wolverine was so bad it could have been a DC film You mean like Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, Wonder Woman, Aquaman...?

In order: boring, almost great but pulled defeat from the jaws of victory, haven't seen/no desire to see but plot sounds awful, very poor and massively overrated, not seen/no desire to see. And those are the better ones - XMO:W is more on a level with Justice League and Son of Martha v Son of Martha

I don't think we're going to agree As will be apparent from my comments above, I'm not a fan of the DK trilogy (apart from most of the first 90 minutes of Dark Knight) and I've loathed Superman The Movie since it first came out. But - different strokes for different folks and all that. The Marvel films work better for me, the DC films (or some of them) work better for you, which is cool otherwise the film landscape would be much blander if everything was aimed at exactly the same sensibility
