Charles Bradley covering the Black Sabbath song "Changes". Another one of those songs, like Badfinger's "Without You," that only seems to come alive when covered by someone else. The Sabbath version from Vol. 4 is dreadful, whiny, unconvincing and thankfully the exception on that album. It definitely works better as a sort of Al Green-derived gospel number like this. Thanks for putting it in front of me.

And Daker returns, md62 ! With John's perserverance, Reva's warp speed piano playing, the awesome subtitles, the weird pairing of the two songs & all the comments - John will ALWAYS be a classic! One of my colleagues is retiring in Feb 2018. I am buying him a John Daker T shirt & hat. Make America whep again!

Thanks for putting it in front of me. I hope this doesn't come across as knee-jerk contrarianism, but I love both those original version - Sabbath's Changes and Badfinger's Without You. I find Ozzy's vocal plaintive and moving rather than whiny, and the Badfinger is such a contrast to the Harry Nilsson cover (which is of course great, but in a totally different way) that I find it fascinating -and, to use that same word again, moving, especially Pete Ham's 9I think that's him?) vocals on the verses. I'm curious to hear the Charles Bradley Changes, though. The link didn't work for me here in Canada but I'll try to find another one I can listen to.

I hope this doesn't come across as knee-jerk contrarianism, but I love both those original version - Not at all. I didn't mean to suggest that my opinion was the correct one, or even widely held. I usually tack a YMMV on the end of these, but omitted it on this one. I hope you have a chance to listen to the Charles Bradley version. I'm interested now to hear your thoughts.

Sinatra was one of the finest singers of the 20th century, an excellent performer and entertainer, a pretty good actor, a fabulous swinging rat packer. But if you consider him a musician then you'll have to include Britney Spears, Davy Jones of the Monkees and Alvin of the Chipmunks. They all never created music or could actually play it on a professional level (Well, Davy Jones did play a mean tambourine) Davy Jones could play drums. The showrunners wanted Micky (who could play guitar) out front singing, but they felt that short Davy got lost behind the drum kit, so they placed Micky on drums instead. From Le Wiki - "In Peter Tork's commentary, he stated that Jones was a good drummer and had the live performance lineups been based solely on playing ability, it should have been Tork on guitar, Mike Nesmith on bass, and Jones on drums, with Micky Dolenz taking the fronting role, rather than as it was done (with Nesmith on guitar, Tork on bass, and Dolenz on drums). Mostly playing tambourine or maracas, Jones filled in briefly for Tork on bass when he played keyboards." FUN FACT: I'm sure many of you know this already, but for the one or two of you who don't... there was another "Davie Jones" who changed his name so he wouldn't get confused with Davy Jones from the Monkees. David "Bowie" gave music a good try, but just couldn't live up to the excellent standard set by the One True Davy Jones.

Tori Amos was the queen of covers in the early 1990s. Her unique takes on everything from Nirvana and REM to The Rolling Stones and Led Zepplin were truly outstanding. She could find something haunting and beautiful in the lyrics that had always been there, quietly simmering, and then give it a totally new voice. But ThIS was my favorite cover she ever did -- completely unprepared and on a whim during a radio interview: Digging up some old Shax Fax here... Anyway... Tori did a piano-only cover of "Love Song" by the Cure which was... okay, I guess. But then someone else remixed it (does that count as a cover?) into this, which I absolutely love -
