Not my favorite, but this is probably universally accepted as being one of the world's greatest covers. I LOVE early Dylan, but even I'll concede his original version of this song kinda' sucked. From what I've heard this song is from the turn of the century and had been recorded in the 1930's as a blues jam. It's my favorite cover for sure.

Even older than Guthrie, who also had a hit with it. The Animals version is probably my favorite, but the lyrics in their take bug me. The song just made so much sense when it was a wife singing about her terrible husband. Adapting it to a son singing about his terrible father makes several lines just head-scratchers.

For some reason I can think of plenty of covers that were horrible and worthy of the a caning for the artist that covered them.
"Betcha By Golly Wow" was covered by Prince (of who you will NOT find on youtube) on Emancipation, that I never knew was a cover for a long time.

As answer to the question...probably Aretha Franklin's cover of Otis Redding's "Respect."

For me the best cover songs are the ones that puts the original in a new dress. After all, if you going to cover it note-by-note then why bother? For example a decade ago bunch of Metal artist paid tribute to ABBA. It worked very well for me. This would be the newest example of job well done. DragonForce - Ring of Fire

I love this version, and its one of those covers that I think it far superior to the original.
