Wonderman was always a D list character to me. They never really knew what to do with him. He was even a villain opposing the Avengers at the end of Bendis' run. He's spent the last year or so trapped in Rogue's head. They finally rescued him last month.

Personally, I loathe the Byrne issues of WCA. he completely destroyed Vision, who has never recovered as a character. And his stuff with Wanda was both cringey self-fan-service and a tired rehash of the dark Phoenix storyline. I don't think I could dislike the run more. Has he never recovered ? Waid is writing him pretty well in the Latest Avengers series. I wouldn't call one good story 30 years later to be a recovery. I mean, I know he's been used in some interesting stories in the last decade or so, but back in the 70's he was one of the big heavyweights in the Avengers. He never had his own book, but he was treated like a big wheel in Avengers and other books. After Bryne dismantled him and reduced him to an unfeeling robot with no personality whatsoever, undoing almost two decades of character growth and development, he became just a background character used to fill out the roster and plug plot holes during fight scenes. Over the next 15 years, the only work done with him was writers slowly trying to undo Bryne's destruction, leading to stories that essentially just rehashed character work from the 70's in the service of simply restoring him to a useable character. It's like... DC did some good stories with the original Captain Marvel once they revived him in the 70's, but he certainly never really recovered from the lawsuit that cancelled his book in the 50's and led to two decades being dormant.

Well, I agree that Byrne trashed him. You're right that he's never recovered, but he hasn't disappeared. The new Waid stories do him justice. It's funny that all the hooey that Byrne talks about keeping the characters faithful to the creators idea was totally violated this time.

Vision is the main character in the last Waid story.. but yeah, he's still a lot more robotic than the old days.

While I agree with most people here that Vision is different now then before Byrne, I really enjoyed the Vision series that recently came out. It was a very good 12 issues series. I also kind of like the current status of him as a father. His daughter is a descent character to.

I haven't read that series yet.. waiting for the trade... I've heard only good things, though.

I really enjoyed the rebirth of Wonder Man in Avengers as the man who had death issues yet overcame that fear and chose to be a true hero. But no writer afterwards ever got pass the fear issues. I had such hopes for the man who hits like Thor's hammer and the man who had a company which rivaled Stark's yet instead he has been written as weak willed, fearful, co-dependent, a jerk and recently as sanctimoniously arrogant.
I want the man of wonders who is ageless/immortal and fearless since he faced death in his own way and now knows he is essentially composed of ionic energy making him potentially one of the strongest forces on Earth. He could be an incredible hero if writer's would start looking at the positives of his character and not continually focusing on the negative aspects. Create a decent costume (the Perez one is NOT all that horrible, just the colors/tones and lack of detailing mucles/highlights/darkness) and providing Wondy with a strong, positive and powerful enthusiasm for life and you have a great character. Make a Wonder Man and Beast series with both being vibrant uplifting heroes pursuing the dream of action and fun and joy in life as they overcame their darker circumstances and i am there...

The only time I liked Wonder Man was when he was in the Avengers with the Beast. It's sad that their friendship seemed to be forgotten over the years but maybe it's just as well; nowadays it would probably be labelled a br*m*nce or some other execrable term.

Wonder Man is a character I am very unfamiliar with. Outside of recently reading a bit about his origin, I know nothing about the character. Was he ever used in any interesting capacity? Did he ever have any noteworthy moments? I saw he had a mini series (in late 80's early 90's?) and wondered if there was anything good there...I like offbeat stuff that entertains. However, reading about him makes him seem like a third rate-Supermanesque type character with a very boring costume so the draw visually is not there for me. If anyone has any more details or enjoyed anything with him in it, I would love to know! Ever do anything interesting? Why he proved that George perez might be color blind! Or at least fashionably challenged. Wondy's reappearance, as a zombie, is worth reading, then his use in the Shooter era, especially withe the Beast. he also had a nice issue of Marvel Two-in-One (#78). Thing and Wondy always seemed to make a good pair. I don't care what anyone says, I still think this was a good costume, though the original slightly edges it as my favourite WM design. As for the characterisation, I thought Shooter over-played the self-doubt to the point of making it a gimmick. I see it as a precursor to today's style of comics-writing, a kind of mechanical by-the-numbers approach, where you can almost see the gears laboriously turning over as they try to come up with something to make a character distinct.

Their friendship hasn't been forgotten-it's very much in evidence in the most recent issue of Uncanny Avengers.

Beast is in Uncanny Avengers? Really? That's kinda cool.. since when? Is it the actual (pardon the pun) real McCoy, or the AoA one, or some other one, or what?

He was a part of the storyline where they finally beat the Red Skull and deprived him of the psychic powers he'd stolen from the late Professor X; Beast performed brain surgery!
