dear james,
i support this thread's topic, and your right to ask us to answer your question. However, I also respect kirby and Icc. equally to you.
this means that in respect to both Icc and kirby, and having been published before in the realm of comics, and knowing how often comics-board-comments are 'whored out' for the sake of a treatise or paid-blog-post or internet-article, which I have seen many many many times before this thread cropped up (it happens often), I shall be answering/supporting this thread of yours, but out of respect to the global comics-community, be doing so in a way that cannot be used in a fashion which takes advantage of ANY member's post in this thread, or any thread i choose to reply to.
I add this in observance of the fact that you, james, have not replied here, at all. Nor offered any input re your own ideas/opinions on this topic. And maybe kirby was being more polite than myself in the way he/she was gently attempting to ward you off.
So as to avoid people posting for free accidentally assisting someone making a buck out of them, sans formal (legal) permission.
which pseudo-journalists (with no talent) of the current digital-article age attempt to fandangle, all the time.
i'm sure you are not one of the lacking-genetalia-and-spine quasi-journaistic w****** seeking to make a quid out of the comicbook-media-qoutient, via posts made by people here, but it WOULD be nice if, after I supported you here, you could affirm that.
in respect to kirby and Icc. And everyone see here.

I've loved Kelly Jones since he began in the indies (with Chrome, if memory serves). His fantasy-batman inked by Ordway is one of my fave artistic expressions in any medium. despite massive reliance upon photo-ref. i love it to tears. this, however, s***s me to gasps. As badly as the Liefeld Enchantress. For the same reasons. Those muscles are scary (and I'm not even sure what that is on the right--his chest, an arm, a leg?) but I actually like the picture overall. Everything else about it is great looking, and I love the composition. I think this is one I'd file under "stylization" rather than bad art.

it's supposed to be a leg. but bad judgement calls are part and parcel of bad art, so i respect your opinion, yet demurely disagree. Again, I love 99% of Jones' work. in fact, if you look at the quadroceps-to-the-kneecap on the right, it looks like a mellow, happy little face, formed by the shadows on the anatomy. THAT I like

BTW, james, I think if you're gonna ask 'does any one have examples of some classic artists just doing bad art in a comic?', then it's fair and equal to ask if there are "examples of any untalented artists, made famous by dint of promotion alone, sans talent, like Chris Ware or Bechdel, and did they ever just do any good art in a comic?" You don't have permission to reproduce anything I said in this thread, for any purpose, unless you include THAT, verbatim, unexpurgated, unedited. Hope you come back here soon.

You might have pointed this out before Lothesware, but it's entirely possible that a good artists work can be savaged by a bad ink job. The go- to offender is often times Vinnie Colletta, although I always liked Vinnies work.

The go- to offender is often times Vinnie Colletta, although I always liked Vinnies work. well said, and yes, though I expressed the 'inking concern' in the recent Byrne thread ('Just Sayin'), not here. Your point is salient (and welcomed) for several reasons: 1: best pencils can be rendered into worst art by 'bad' inkers (even avoiding Colletta, who, to be fair, often did graceful linework which ended up looking like $%^$#@!!! when reproduced by the photomechanical processes, and paper-print choices made by marvel at the time; good photos of the original pages of his work over Kirby in FF vs recent reprints prove this): however, Vinnie should have taken this into account; he would have known better; his previous work and experience meant that he would have known that much of his finesse, bestowed upon Kirby, looking lovely on the physical page, would have looked a dog's-breakfast in the printing processes of the time. then again, we have the Don Perlin inks on Byrne Ghost Rider pages, for which there is no excuse, save for editorial-idiocy in pairing the two. great post, Icc! meanwhile, still waiting on your comeback, james!

It comes down to personal aesthetics, but there are many times I felt they had the absolute wrong inker on a penciler. Not that the inker is bad, they just don't work at all with that artist's style. I was not a fan of Ernie Chau (Chan) on John Buscema for example.

No replies. Every artist has bad days, sometimes it's a matter of a deadline rush, health issues or inking problems. Maybe people don't want to harp on good artists having a bad day. (I know you didn't intend to be meanspirited) No i didnt mean to be mean spirited. Just thought id expound on the "Worst Comic art panel ever" thread. Which one could also say was mean spirited.

I was just thinking out loud as to why no replies. Not that you were in the wrong for this thread.

I was never a Kelley Jones fan but his work has grown on me and think he did great art on the recent Swamp Thing mini series.

I'm not sure if you're thinking I'm some kind of, I don't know, troll that is trying to stir up controversy in order to sell to a site with quotes out of text etc. But trust me it's just a question in response to an earlier thread from a lover of comics for the last 38 years. With my job investigating Child Abuse, I don't have time or energy to do such things.
