I have to agree with Confessor here. Allred gained fame with Madman. which I didn't read, and now is the artist of the popular Silver Surfer book, which I also don't read. Both those titles skew generic mainstream superhero comics, so his rep as a creator of different types of books might be earned. What i have read of him looks like the panels posted. I think he he is a very competent artist whose style I am ambivalent about.

that would be fair except for the fact i don't think all or most off allred's panels suck; i think THOSE panels suck in Particular. OK, it seems as if I've misunderstood you. It's just that in your earlier post you described Allred as an "utter emperor's new clothes poster boy" and those panels as "excrement", so I think you can see why I'd assume you think all of Allred's work sucks. i've seen work from 19 year old graffiti artists on walls that did it better. Sorry, but that sounds like a rather silly, hyperbolic thing to say, even if it's true. I have no dog in this fight because I'm barely familiar with any of Mike Allred's work anyway, but of the panels you've posted, they all look like professional standard comic book art to my eyes. Sure, the artwork has a slightly "cartoony", Pop Art or Silver Age look to it stylistically, but that's obviously intentional and part of the artist's chosen style. Of course there might be some "19 year old graffiti artists" who are better, but I've also seen slide guitar busker's on the street of Brighton who put Ry Cooder to shame, and open mic singers that could run rings around Adele vocally. Neither of those facts are particularly germane to a discussion of the merits of Ry Cooder or Adele's oeuvre though. I don't know, to each his own, I guess. I just don't see those Allred panels as being particular bad examples of comic book art. Sorry.

I don't follow Allred, but I've never seen art by him that I didn't like--like Cooke or Rude when firing on all cylinders, he captures the character and excitement of the silver age. And Joe from Madman is probably one of the best developed female characters in comics (talking characterization--get your minds out of the gutter!)
As far as the examples: I've seen whole bronze age books where the art doesn't hit the same level of quality these show.

Sorry. no need to be sorry, you're the Mod God I think if you'd had to ink pages on deadline for any of the big 4, you might see my point, and understand how it's not hyperbolic. Different experiences yield different perceptions, and in turn, perceptions by others of expressed perceptions. just like a previous 'iteration' of this topic which occured on facebook years ago, much the same topic, where one of the most famous feminist comics-creators said (about Kirby) pretty much what i said about Allred. I felt he'she was entitled to her opinion; I argued mechanical/technical aspects of the art for the debate, but since she had actually created comics/graphic novels on a deadline as hard and fast as anyone else, i never used adjectives such as 'hyperbolic'. though you are in your rights to do so, towards me. just as i, having dealt with ink and bristol, have a right to say that i know when Allred is SLACKING and using 'style' as an excuse, no different to what Warhol did in his cinenatic 'exploits'. but you're the mod. and likely, no-one else will have any critiques for famous (good or not) artists on this thread anyway.
