this is the battle of Adam Warlock in the 70's vs Nick Fury in the late 60's here.
poiltics be damned,
vote for which artist 'opened your mind more', ala 1967 summer of Love music.

I would never pair those artists. Steranko was more of an innovator through storytelling and design. Starlin did cosmic better than anyone (well maybe not Kirby)
But since I experienced Steranko first, I would say he "opened my mind" more.
I think Captain Marvel and Warlock were great, but Captain America 110. 111 & 113 still stand as perhaps the best Marvel books ever published.
btw; I like the name change Loves.

I never got the appeal of Satrlin's ar, especially since I already had Kirby on one side and Whrightson on he other. Most of it seems too amateurish for my personnal tastes. Steranko is a whole different deal : I've bought comics solely for Steranko covers when I still only was interested in stories. I don't think he's the ultimate artist, far from hat, and I can see a few shortcomings in his technique, but he sure was bringing Dali and surrealism to Marvel audiences with Nick Fury, so just for that he'll always have a place in history, when Starlin is artwise more of a local affair IMHO.

I agree Arthur that Starlin wasn't tops as far as his art goes. I think he was a good artist, but a better story teller. I did like his art though. His style was fun and pleasing to me and conveyed what he wanted. But it was mainly the content of what he wrote and drew that made him worthy of discussion.

Since I'm not a Starlin fan in any way, shape, or form. this was a no-brainer for me: it's Steranko all the way.
Cei-U! I summon the easy choice!

Starlin trumps Steranko. Steranko is the better artist and visual stylist but for "opening the mind" it was Starlin's cosmic/religious/personal introspection with Adam Warlock that had more depth and concepts going on. Steranko is great to look at once in awhile but seldom did it seem to be any deeper than look at this cool art while you can read Starlin over and over and pick up new thoughts and ideas.
There should also be a third choice: Steve Ditko! Ditko to this day is the man who can mind trip you faster than anything...

Strictly as an artist, Steranko, but as a combination of writing + art, the Jim Starlin of those early Warlock and Captain Marvel comics - partly because I was old enough to appreciate those when I came in at the tail-end of the Magus saga.

With this username do I even have to explain myself? :-)
But I do like Steranko's art. But Fury comics seemed to never appeal to my sensibilities so I've never read any.
Now let me go vote so we can even the odds on this here poll.

Starlin was weirder, but Steranko was much yummier, so I had to vote for Steranko. Never been a fan of Starlin.

As others have stated, Steranko was the better pure artist, but Starlin was more well-rounded when taking his talents as a writer into consideration.
If we factored pure writers into the conversation, Steve Gerber would wipe the floor with both.
When you come up with the idea of a jar of peanut butter transforming into a Conan-esque warrior, you're the master of the weird.

Steranko by a mile as far as Yummy goes. I'm not a huge Starlin fan. About the only thing he's done that I really cared for was Dreadstar.
