I've been sorting through my comics and trades, deciding what is staying and what is going in the great comic cull of 2017, and I was struck by how many different publishers I currently own comics by. A quick tally of part of my stash revealed 58 different publishers I had comics and/or trades by, and there is a whole closet of short boxes I haven't gotten too yet to go through.
I know some folks are Marvel fans, some DC sans, some Big 2 fans, some indy fans, etc. but I am curious how many different publishers' wares you folks have sampled.
the partial list for me...
DC and all its imprints (Wildstorm, Vertigo, Helix etc.) Marvel and all it's imprints (Epic, Icon, etc.) Image IDW Dark Horse
(i.e. today's big 5)
plus...
A-Plus Aardvark-Vanaheim AC Comics ACG Adam Fields (self-publisher) Adventure Albiogenesis Archaia (pre-BOOM takeover) Archie Arrden Avatar BOOM! Caliber Cartoon Books Charlton (including Modern Comics reprints) Thecomic.com Comico Comics Journal Continuity Dabel Brothers Dell Dustin Carson (self-publisher) Dynamite Eagle Eclipse Eye-N-Apple Productions Fantagrphics First Gold Key (including Whitman) Green Man Press Harvey Heavy Metal Associated (HM) Humanoids Kitchen Sink Legendary Malibu (including Bravura) Mandalay Productions Millennium Mirage Oni Pacific Papercutz Renegade Slave Labor Graphics So How 'bout Comics (self-publisher) Speakeasy Terra Major Tiger Comics Titan Topps Twilight Star Studios (self-publisher) Valiant Verotik
I am sure there are more to come and some I missed in the stuff I already went through.
I think I might need a little more variety in the comics I read...

Counting only those publishers represented by actual paper-and-ink comics (and discounting fanzines, prozines, and trades), the magic number is 17. They are:
Archie Charlton Comico Dark Horse DC Dell Fantaco First Gold Key IDW King Kitchen Sink Marvel Prize Rip-Off Press Rocket Wally Wood/CPL/Gang Publishing
If we factor in my electronic inventory, the count goes up to 68, including
Ace ACG Centaur Chesler/Dynamic Columbia Comics Magazine Co. (Cook-Mahon) David McKay Eastern Color EC Fawcett Fiction House Fox Gilberton Harvey Hillman Holyoke Lev Gleason Magazine Enterprises MF Enterprises Milson Novelty Press Parents' Magazine Quality Rural Home Companion Standard/Better/Nedor/Pines St. John Street & Smith Toby Press Tower Ultem United Feature Warren
and a whole buncha tiny fly-by-night publishers of the '40s.
Cei-U! I summon the plethora of publishers!

I don't have them organised enough to even take a guess.

estimates are fine if folks want to make an educated guess. I wouldn't expect folks to know the exact number off the top of their heads unless that number were very small . I wouldn't have known the number for me if I hadn't been going through things looking to purge stuff and deciding what to keep.

I think I'm around 25-30 for comics in my "collection" - i.e. stuff I bought on purpose because I want that specific thing. So that's what I voted for.
Having said that, I also love curiosities and weird, obscure indy books, so I probably have stuff from another 20 or more "publishers" that may have only put out one or two books before folding. I didn't count those because they're just kind of interchangeable in my mind.

My inventory as of a couple of years ago has 37 publishers. I think I've acquired a few new ones since then but it will be a while before I can update the inventory.

It's gotta be more than 50. Who published the Great Society Comic book, ferinstance?

Best guess at the moment would be somewhere between 20-25 publishers.
