Hawkman and Hawkwoman for sure. Since my dad bought me the Shadow War of Hawkman, I've been hooked.
And although I feel like I haven't read enough stories with her, Dawnstar.

I can't believe we've ignored Jack Kirby's greatest creation.

1. Hawkgirl
One of the strongest female characters in a great cartoon 2. Hawkman
Carter Hall, that is. Love Geoff Johns' revision of the character and his history. 3. Other - Shikari of DnA's Legion
A new character (and race) introduced by DnA during the Legion Lost mini. From the edges of the known universe, Shikari found a worthy and honorable home among the members of the Legion.

Angel would be my second choice. I always thought he was cool and a visually beautiful character. I lost interest when they changed him to Archangel and have no idea which version he is now. I agree. They took a character who was already really cool and ruined him by trying to make him cool. Couldn't agree more, they basically destroyed the character in a desperate attempt to make him seem edgy and dangerous, as though hat's what he needed to be. He didn't. For the record: Archangel was eventually restored to his Angel form, but a later writer then decided he wasn't cool enough and made him Archangel again. He was killed off, resurrected as Angel but minus his memories (and with the weird delusion that he was actually a real angel), was eventually restored to his old self, and was then almost immediately made Archangel again, this time a near mindless killing machine controlled by Psylocke. He has since regained his mind but is still Archangel, as dark and brooding as ever. Somewhere along the way, the Beast brought versions of the original X-Men into the present from the past, including a young Angel who is now co-existing with Archangel. However, it was evidently felt that even one non messed up Warren Worthington was one too many, so he was later robbed of his original wings and given wings of fire by alien technology. So, we now have two versions of the character active, and neither version is really the Angel that Stan and Jack created.

I can't believe we've ignored Jack Kirby's greatest creation. A common misconception. In fact, the first-and-only Red Raven story is by Joe Simon and Louis Cazeneuve. Kirby did, however, contribute the Mercury and Comet Pierce stories in this issue. Cei-U! I summon the island in the sky!

Hawkman, who has a commanding lead, is an interesting case. I liked, but never loved Carter Hall, the Earth-One Hawkman. He wasn't a patch on a lot of other members of the JSA, but he was always okay.
I HATED the Silver Age Hawkman. Now...that was largely from reading JLA and the odd back-up, because he didn't have his own book during my formative comic reading. But I found him boring as dry white toast.
Then came Hawkworld. I loved that original mini-series. And I loved the early issues of the ongoing. But Tim Truman and John Ostrander probably had more to do with that than the characters. And in retrospect I think I probably liked Hawkwoman as a character more than Katar.

Now as for the poll, it's a no-brainer for me: I voted for Hawkman and Hawkwoman (Shayera)... and er, um, Red Raven ('cause of that crazy cover). As I have related in other threads, my cousins had a huge collection of DCs and I remember reading a lot of their Hawkman comics (talking Silver Age here). The Murphy Anderson art mesmerized me--it seemed more intricate to me than a lot of other comic book art I'd seen at the time--and I really loved the interplay between the Halls.

Murphy Anderson was born to draw Hawkman and this is one of my personal favorites ... His ability to draw wings and the headress of Hawkman and the colors and the boldness of his design and that steady hands of his makes Hawkman a personal favorite of mine for years and years. I'm too mesmerized and sometimes I just can't turn a page of that book because his art stalls the story that I'm reading.

I summon the island in the sky! Oh. Shoot. Yeah, I was thinking of RR. I didn't actually remember that Kirby didn't pencil the Red Raven story. That COVER is obviously him!

2. Darkhawk ... Christopher Powell is the coolest Superhero and a favorite of mine in the Silver Age having an unique set of powers that it's so cool that I just can't get enough of him. Darkhawk's first appearance was cover dated March 1991, more than twenty years after the end of the Silver Age.

Sinclair from Farel Dalrymple's Pop-Gun War borrowed his wings from a down-on-his-luck angel. Probably my actual favorite.
