Or maybe Everett just forgot. I never got the sense he cared all that much about the Sub-Mariner (or superheroes in general) and would have much rather have continued as a horror artist. (Although the Comics Code made that difficult.)

And according to comics.org that was Ken Bald who drew those two Namora covers posted above. If the niterrior art is as good as those I'll have to start looking for these comics.
Speaking of Everett reminds me to ask: how close was the characterisation in Everett's original Sub-Mariner stories to the proud, sometimes verging on arrogant, "Imperius Rex" Namor of the 60s and 70s Marvel? The very little I've seen leads me to suspect it was rather different, but I haven't seen enough to go by.

Completely different - still kind of proud but much younger and not completely humorless. All around, much, much better.
(I talked about this in the Inhumans thread but I think that Stan was awful at writing these regal outsider characters - His strength was creating relatable characters that more-or-less resembled the people he knew. He could write alien (or Latverian) monarchs as villains, but never as heroes or even anti- heroes.
Anyway, the major take-a-way is that the Lee/Kirby Sub-Mariner sucks so much and also I hate it.
Did you read the Lee/Colan Sub-Mariner? I can't believe two of my favorite creators ever did something so bad.

No, but I find it hard to believe I won't like the Colan artwork at least, even if it isn't suitable for the character.
What about when Everett returned to the Sub-Mariner at Marvel - di he go back to something more like his old characterisation or stay with what had by then become the standard Marvel version?

Everett was doing Everett's Namor. And why shouldn't he? I think the art was a little jarring to regular Marvel fans. But looking back it was some of the best art Everett had done. He sadly died soon after these last pages of his creation.

Didn't Namorita turn blue at some point?

Didn't Namorita turn blue at some point? She was very down and went through a Picasso phase.

I'll just say that Stingray is the biggest surprise to me on this list. I'm sure I've read comics with that character in them over the years. I'm just damned if I can remember any of them.

I went with Aqualad, because one Christmas I got that Action Boy figure and 2 costumes to go with it, Superboy, and Aqualad. I picked creature from the Black Lagoon, cause it's a wonderful film, and Namor, for the Bill Everett stories, and creation.

I was a bit surprised at that too, though I shouldn't have been since I picked him myself and also remember seeing one or two other long-time posters here mention their liking for Stingray over the years. I think for me it was mainly that I liked the costume from when I was a kid. Now I think of it, it's a bit odd that Stingray and Triton are both such favourites with me, since I don't really feel much attraction to the whole idea of underwater characters in general. But somehow they each made an impression during my early comics reading years - the very earliest, in Triton's case.

In terms of other undersea heroes, there are also the Nektons: a family of undersea explorers from The Deep, an all-ages book by Tom Taylor and James Brouwer. It has also been adapted into a very entertaining animated series.

Didn't Namorita turn blue at some point? Yes. And renamed herself Kymaera.

I WANT a Marvel Deep Blue team of aquatic adventurers. Triton, Stingray (in original outfit), Namorita, Marrina and Orca swimming and surfing the Seven Seas having their summer fun in the sun drinking pina colada's and looking for their lost shaker of salt...

I'm fairly shocked at that, too. He's got an awesome costume, and that must have a lot to do with it. From what little I know of the character, I do like him. I like the fact that he's an Oceanographer who loves the ocean so much he designed himself a kickass superhero costume for sea exploration. I remember an Avengers storyline in the 80's (when they had that floating island headquarters in the Atlantic) and also a good Marvel-Two-in-One story arc with him in it, but that's about it for me.
