Dial "H" for Hero first appeared in House of Mystery #156, and featured a boy named Robby who discovers a mysterious dial in a cave. Robby finds out he can turn into a different superhero each time he dials H-E-R-O, and dialing O-R-E-H would turn him back to normal. Thus began the adventures of Robby, who would often exclaim his excitement with a "Sockamagee!". Later in the series Robby meets a girl named Suzy who finds out his secret and ends up dialing H-E-R-O-I-N-E. The original series ended in House of Mystery #173, but would later re-appear as a special insert in Legion of Super-Heroes #272, and then continuing on in Adventure Comics #479-490 and New Adventures of Superboy #28-49. The catch this time was that readers could submit their own Hero to DC, with the possibility of being featured in a story. This is my attempt to catalog every Hero that ever appeared in the original series, beginning with House of Mystery #156 through New Adventures of Superboy #49. I plan to add the Hero's created after 1984 at some point, (such as the H.E.R.O. and Dial H series') but as of now I do not own those issues. It's possible I may miss a Hero or two along the way, and help is certainly appreciated. Maybe this has been done already, maybe it hasn't. I thought it would be an interesting glimpse back when costumes were just fun and silly, where guys wearing candy canes, fuzzballs and sponges for costumes could get away with it. It's also an ode to creativity, to honor those readers who saw their dreams realized if but for a moment, as their very own Hero was portrayed in a story. In the end we may have a vote for best/worst costumes. Who knows? Let's get started! Name: Giant Boy First Appearance: House of Mystery #156 (written by Dave Wood) Known Powers: As big as a Giant, super-strength. They should bring back The Human Starfish in New 52 Aquaman.
And the Mighty Moppet should be the new Robin!

This is one of the coolest threads ever.
It has been a LONG time since I've flipped through those House of Mystery stories, but doesn't he eventually get a female companion? Will you feature her superhero personas as well?

Will you feature her superhero personas as well? Yes Suzy's Heroines will also appear, as will Villains. I'll try to include everything ever dialed, if possible! Hoosier X, the Human Starfish is one of my favorites. Would love to see him return! Actually, that issue (#159) is probably my favorite of the series. Just loved that lineup. I'll post more later when I get a chance. Stay tuned!

You really need to mention that Jim Mooney drew most of the House of Mystery series. You really need to mention how Dave Wood wrote the series. You really need to mention how Bill Finger pitched in to write #162. You really need to mention how Otto Binder wrote # 167 & 169. You really need to mention how Frank Springer took over the art for #171 and 172. You really need to mention how Sal Trapani drew the last issue. Hope that helps. No -don't thank me-Don't mention it

Yes, Plastic Man's first appearence in the Silver Age. It pre-dates his 10 issue solo book from DC in the 60s

Did Dial "H" for Hero replace J'onn J'onzz in House of Mystery?
I have a confession. I've read a lot of comics, and I'm a big fan of the Silver Age. I love stuff like the Metal Men, and I've usually read at least one story of most Silver Age DC series - like Eclipso, Deadman, Viking Prince, Metamorpho, Rip Hunter - through reprints.
But I've never read a single Dial H for Hero story. (Though I do vaguely remember the ads for one of the revivals, either the 1970s or the 1970s.)
It looks hysterical. King Kandy is irresistible. And all those great Silver Age artists!
