Please tell me there are villainesses out there who were not made that way because they were hurt by a man or because they hate other women? And yes, "Crazy Bitch Syndrome" counts as long as they are not crazy for the aforementioned reasons. Are the super villain women of today portrayed in a less sexist way than those of the golden and silver ages? Lilith (sort of a villainess / anti-heroine) from Marvel's The Tomb of Dracula. Madame Rouge from DC's The Doom Patrol. Both were motivated by reasons other than the jilted girl and/or hating other women.

Madame Masque - though I haven't read every appearance of her, I've always liked the brewing and semi-tragic romance between her and Tony Stark. As for Catwoman, my first real exposure to her as a kid was through Miller's Year One. Given his crime noir styling and the typical dark street world of Gotham and Batman, I've never really had a fault with her being from the world of prostitution. Not every woman in film noir or in crime fiction is a prostitute. Not even close.

She wasn't really marketed as a villain, but I love the original golden age Claire Voyant(heh) Black Widow. A 'superhero' who's raison d'être was killing criminals to capture their souls for Satan. I guess you could say her stories were based around a subservient relationships too a man, but it certainly was an original motivation for crimefighting.
