It's funny because it's true!
(Still my favourite Tolkien book, though!)

Full trailer just dropped at SDCC...
at the very least, it looks like it will be an entertaining high fantasy series inspired by Tolkien. Won't be able to say more until I actually watch the series.

Feels like pretty generic modern tv/movie fantasy - apart from a few Tolkien-specific references it could easily have been an ad for a new Marvel movie or Game of Thrones series as far as the overall vibe went. Part of that is I suppose due to Jackson't LotR movies having been so successful they influenced the fantasy films and tv that came afterwards.

Mike Ploog's rendition of the Fellowship... -M I have a feeling you might have posted it before, but it doesn't matter: it's ace enough to warrant a second viewing. The character design is clearly influenced by the 1978 Ralph Bakshi animated film, and I'm guessing it was produced as a tie-in promo for the film??

Ploog was a storyboard artist for Bakshi studios at the time and worked on that production. I am not sure this was from the actual production, but Ploog's style influenced the production and vice versa on this piece. -M

We did get Ploog's short-lived and scattered Weirdworld, of course, and based on that you can see that a Ploog drawn LOTRs comic based on the Bakshi film would've been great.

With Christopher Tolkien's children seeming to be more commercially minded I wonder how long it will be until we do see a comic set in Middle Earth? I gather the rights issues for the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit might make a straight adaptation of either difficult but other stuff would seem on the table. I'm not sure I necessarily want more, I'm slightly wary of the new Tolkien "products" being put out by Amazon and WB, but it is interesting to think about.

We have had 1 Tolkien comic adaptation, the 3 issue Hobbit mini form Eclipse by Chuck Dixon with painted art by David Wenzel, and it is exceptional. There was also a pseudo-adaptation of the Bakshi movie into comics in the Warren Presents issue, but it used stills form the animated features instead of art created specifically for it. -M
