I have 40 costumes written down so far. I scoured my OHATMU and Who's Who issues and looked at various Wikis for updates and stuff for some ideas. I'm trying not to be too predictable with my selections but I think I have some cool pics and some ones you might have not of thought of.
Now its time to scale

I could literally do a list of Batman villains. I'm not. But I could. Probably Spider-Man villains too.
It is a bit difficult to separate the "I like this villain" from the "cool design". I'm trying, but I may not be successful.
I have one strip villain that I'm teetering on. I LOVE him. But I'm not sure that it's really because of the design as much as the execution of the villain.
My other two strip villains really represent archetypes of villains I tend to love.

I only have 2 nailed down so far, Day 1 and Day 12. The rest is a morass of confusion and possibilities right now. But that's pretty much how it is every year for me. The good thing, the best design topics rarely send me out scouring for new stories to read so it will be better on my wallet/budget this year than in story based years, as I have compiled enough reading material to get me through this winter and beyond already at the last 2 shows I went to.

Making my criteria for choices taken from my beginnings with Marvel and DC in the middle of the 70's when i was 1st beginning to connect with comic books. Avoiding newspaper choices as growing up my folks would only purchase the Sunday paper and while I ate those up I don't have strong enough remembrance or connection to those villains. It was those formative years of buying comic books where nickels and pennies were held in earnest as you seek and search for characters that jumped out at you and captures your attention. Villains especially as they might roam from series to series fighting other heroes so I was constantly on the watch for anything with certain villains I began to like. See that would be tough for me because so many of the villains I like from my childhood are actually terribly designed visually, and while I would include them in a favorite villain list I would not include them in a best designed villain list as this one is. -M Believe me, it hasn't been all that hard for me. And for me a best designed villain means if their actual design suits/fits the character and either emphasizes or highlights them. An example for a hero would be Thor, whose overall look doesn't really say Nordic/Viking but the designs and style does seem to suggest mythological/historical/fantasy and up until the 90's it remained unchanged and Hawkeye who also pretty much remained the same and showed off his flamboyant carnival style and invoked medieval archers at the same time. Both Superman and Batman: they are near perfect representations that are iconic and also helped to set the standard comic book designed costume and again with minor touches remained essentially the same costume for several decades.

Looking forward to this event and I wished tomorrow was December 13th so that we can get the ball rolling!

This one I threw a list out of cool costumes and whittled it down. Honestly, I might just wing it all 12...

I got my list to 23. I'm not going to sweat the 'best' bit; I'll just stick to ones I like. I'm sure I'm missing some great ones, and will probably pick some that everybody else will go 'WTF' at, but that's the fun of it, right? Putting the list together I noticed something weird. 7 of the characters I picked are in pretty similar outfits. Apparently I have a type . I thought about listing them all on one day as co-picks, but that would really mess up the tallying at the end. So I'll pick just one, and give the others honorable mention. (Or I could find 5 more like them, and go with a second list. Hmm.)

I just started thinking about it tonight a little bit, looking up a few names I forget, etc and yeah, it's going to be hard to narrow it down to 12. Several of them are extremely minor characters that I just happened to like the look of in their brief appearances - only a few panels, in some cases.
I have a few with similar looks as well, or rather a few separate sets of 2 or 3 with a similar theme. Not sure if I'll pick just one representative of each set, or what.

Like a lot of folks, I have a pretty sizable list of candidates (30+ and still growing), but I haven't even begun to whittle them down yet. I'm trying hard to base my list just on a villain's costume, rather than any striking psychical attributes that they may have. Super-villain couture is the name of the game for me.

I'm actually struggling with this one! I like clean, iconic designs - like Silver Age DC superheroes - and it doesn't seem like most villains have that type of design. Making me work for this one here.

My #1 came to me right away; it's always been my favorite. The others probably won't have a strict ranking as it's just not possible for me. And I too am having a hard time separating the liking of the character from the design.

Let's say I wanted to pick a costume from the villainous phase of the career of a character that has been both a hero and a villain. If a costume debuted when they were a villain, but was based off of/modified from a similar costume they wore a hero, does that still count?

It depends on how significant the modifications are but theoretically yes, that would still count. Cei-U! I summon the wiggle room!
