Really? We are talking about this again? Wow, great subject, and so many fine responses. I believe the answers are all in the replies that have already been written. The costume one is interesting, I don't remember if I felt that way, but as an adult reading early adventures of Namor, I did fell he was way cooler than Aquaman, if not as well known. I too liked him in FF and those mags, but don't remember what the Defenders, or Invaders were like. I do feel maybe Marvel just never really tried to figure him out? I also never liked Gene Colan's drawing of Subby's hair, it looked like he was wearing a helmet. (Yes, I know I am nit picking here, but look at the Namor avatar that one of the posters is using, I like that hair much better.)I do love Colan's other Marvel work. Maybe Stan Lee and Steve Ditko would have been a better team to try out this comic, and take it somewhere. I do feel he still has great potential. and hopefully Marvel will figure out what to do with him. Also thanks to all for pointing out some good Namor comics to look for.

This is the guy I liked. He would scheme to destroy you after he had no use for you.

Back in the late Silver Age, after they got their own books. I liked Submariner more than Ironman. I collected Subby and read IM intermittently. I also very much enjoyed the Everett issues. And Sub-Mariner #56 is one of my favorite single issues. Dan Adkins' art is outstanding. Perhaps one of the problems is few artist really captured the feel of the underwater world he lived in.

They should have kept him at odds with the heroes.

Hello all new member here I saw your forum on Facebook and after reading some of the thoughtful comments here felt compelled to join up. The Sub-Mariner has always been a favorite character in comics for me I have read most of his silver age and golden age appearances and enjoy his persona and way he looks at the surface world race, its a shame he has never gotten a film or TV series it seems like he is forever living in the shadow of DC's Aquaman despite Namors appearance before the competing undersea lord.

Yeah, Subby was supposed to get a live action TV show back in the '50s, but it never panned out. Which is why his solo title outlasted the Human Torch and Captain America revivals. Also: '50s Sub-Mariner is so, so, good. By far my favorite superhero type book of the decade.

I think it's because he smells of fish. So in other words....he stinks as a superhero! 😉

They should have kept him at odds with the heroes. I always enjoyed this match-up from The Avengers, and the way Hercules did not respect Namor's arrogance and threats at all.

It was a great match because both Namor and Herc were both arrogant.
