I think this must be around the time Byrne's style started to change for the worse - to my taste, at least: I know a lot of fans, probably the majority, love his 80s stuff. I still like it here in these samples but not quite as much as my favourite Byrne, the Austin-inked X-Men and the Iron Fist stories mostly inked by Dan Adkins or Frank Chiaramonte. Or maybe it's just that I don't like Byrne's own inks as much as i do Austin's or Adkins's or Chiaramonte's - which would be unusual for me because almost every other favourite penciller I can think of off the top of my head, my preferred inker is the penciller him or herself. Hard to judge some of the characters because they're sitting down or obscured by others in the crowd, but I don't like his Moondragon in the council panel. I always liked Byrne's Black Panther, though, and it's too bad he never drew a few Panther solo stories or even in an issue of Marvel Team-Up or something.

My love for Byrne's art really cooled off in the Eighties. But those X-Men and Iron Fist issues work beautifully for me.

I did notice that the art improved once Byrne stopped inking himself in his Fantastic Four run and Joe Sinnott took over. Overall, though, for whatever reason, I do agree that his 70's work is better than his 80's work. Still, that's not quite as precipitous a drop-off in quality from 70's to 80's work as that experienced by Keith Giffen!!

Agree about Giffen, at least what I've seen - though I do remember liking some Ambush Bug issues in the 80s, but that was a different kind of series.
With Byrne, I wonder if, in addition to any evolution of style that may or may not have been happening, it was just that pencilling, inking, and writing took up so much more time that his artwork suffered a little in comparison to the days when all he had to do was pencil.
