I first heard of Spiro Agnew in an issue of Fantastic Four, in which Nixon reflected that he should let Agnew handle the return of Galactus.
Wasn't he a hyena in Pogo, too?

Indeed he was, in a slight against hyenas, first in all his bare naked glory, then eventually wearing a parody (or exact copy... they were parodies anyway) of the Nixon-designed White House guards' uniforms, right out of Ruritania by way of the Uhlans of Austria-Hungary.

Man, those WH guard uniforms are indeed ridiculous; it reminds me of the Croatian army's 'honorary batallion', a separate parade unit that was formed by the first president (Tudjman - similar to Agnew in many ways) in the early 1990s, with kitschy faux-historical uniforms based on the ceremonial dress of certain Habsburg military units (not just the uhlans)... Throughout the 1990s, they used to have a 'changing of the guard' ceremony in front of the parliament building every day at noon. After Tudjman died in 1999, the next president retired the unit (he even, rightly, called the uniforms ludicrous); however, a few years back, the uniforms were reintroduced for the honor guard that appear at state-level functions (like when foreign dignitaries visit) and they even do that silly changing of the guard thing again, although only on weekends or certain public holidays - supposedly as a tourist attraction. In Croatia's case at least, there's some historical precedent for the uniforms, although any self-respecting 19th or early 20th century Croatian reformer or revolutionary would wonder why these guys are wearing the attire of the oppressor...

I was today years old when I discovered that at least some of those horrendous White House guard uniforms ended up being used by a marching band.

The Natural History Museum of Utah which is on the campus of the University of Utah has a lot of programs featuring native scholars and oral historians. Mostly from Utah based tribes, but sometimes from around the desert southwest as well. I've caught a few over the years.

Pretty good documentary on the Sleepy Lagoon Murder and the Zoot Suit Riots of 1942-43. The name Zoot Suit Riots is pretty well known, but the underlying causes and the history of racism against Latinos in Southern California (not to mention Filipinos) tends to get forgotten.

The Centre Place youtube channel has a lot of historical lectures on a wide range of subjects that I'm liking. They're a religious group, but the content is strictly scholarly, even if each lecture does in some way at least loosely relate to a subject of interest to followers of an Abrahamic faith. I was also concerned, at first, that maybe the "Centre" in their name referred to some hippy-dippy, new-age idea of "seek the middle" or whatever. Apparently it's just the name of the building or plaza they're in. Out of what I've watched recently, this lecture on maps through-out Western history stands out as a nice unexpectedly interesting topic:
John does the vast majority of the lectures. At first, it seemed like he isn't totally comfortable as a public speaker, but I think he's just extremely unassuming.

Documentaries from the PBS show American Experience are generally well worth a watch, but this one really hits home for me. I read Timothy Egan's book The Big Burn about ten years ago. It's nice to get refreshed on the subject and the visuals are a nice addition. And I'm a sucker for anything that touches on Idaho history (and western Montana in this case). Wildfires have become even more of a problem as time has gone on.

Couldn't let today slide by without reminding those fellow Americans of a certain age what happened just about exactly 60 years ago in Dallas as I post this, a moment that serves, symbolically anyway, as one of those days when the world zigged when we'd expected it to zag.
As Frost wrote in "The Road Not Taken," "And that has made all the difference."

Before my time, but it's an event that has fascinated me since I was a child, as well as one that still resonates down the decades. Even over here in the UK, everyone who was alive then can remember exactly where they were when they heard that President Kennedy had been shot. By the way, did you know that authors Aldous Huxley and C.S. Lewis both died on the same day? Oh, and in music, The Beatles released their second album, With The Beatles.

The Royal Crown Revue song "Hey Pachuco" (immortalized in The Mask) was about the Zoot Suit Riots.
