With respect to all our members, I think I hated the trailer. It was really goofy. Captain Marvel is supposed to be goofy. Oh. Maybe that's why I never read a Shazam story that I liked...

The trailer is pretty much Geoff Johns new52 Shazam in a nutshell. It's almost play by play from the stories Johns and Franks did as the back ups in the new52 Justice League.

These two trailiers, particularly the Aquabro one but also this Shazam one, look worse every time you watch it, IMHO

With respect to all our members, I think I hated the trailer. It was really goofy. Captain Marvel is supposed to be goofy. I think Captain Marvel was originally whimsical rather than goofy. One of C.C. Beck's complaints about DC's version of the character in the 70s is that the writers didn't know how to do whimsy. The only way they could think of to make the stories funny was to make Cap a buffoon. Beck quit the series when they sent him a script that had Cap running around with a bucket stuck on his foot. The writers don't seem to have gotten any better.

I like Zachary Levi from his roles on Chuck and Tangled, but this is a hard pass for me. I'm not really sure who the target audience is for this movie, as Captain Marvel hasn't been part of the "popular" popular culture in decades, so his original fanbase is going to be fairly old and I can't see kids like my daughters clamoring to see this.
On the plus side, at least it isn't the usual DC grim and gritty, no fun, everything is dark and serious fare.

The writers don't seem to have gotten any better. Jerry Ordway did a credible job of trying to mix slightly whimsical with straight adventure. He probably succeeded more than anyone in doing a "straight" version of Captain Marvel. Billy Batson and the Power of Shazam was a decent attempt to get back to whimsical. Really, the writer who could have done it is Alan Moore, based on some of the stuff he did in Tom Strong.

Color me surprised
It doesn’t look half bad.
Doesn’t seem to take itself seriously. Just looks like a lighthearted, goofy romp that the whole family can enjoy. Which is exactly what a Shazam movie should be.
I’m at least a little bit intrigued.

It takes a lot to get me into the movie theater these days. I Didn't see Deadpool 2 and I'll probably mis this one. The actor from chuck seems to have buffed up a lot, though.

Most of the members of my LCS inform me that this movie is not up to par and it's a near-bomb in the making. I'll wait until its come on Cable and make an judgment call on it.

Well, the trailer was okay, fun and kinda silly.
My hesitancy remains the focus on the Nu52 version. Maybe I need to re-read it again, Johns' version didn't exactly bowl me over when I first read it.
Given my love of the character though, I'll probably see it regardless.

My only problem with the film from what I've seen of the trailers is this... When he's Captain Marvel or "Shazam" as the comics have him now, he still acts like a kid. Granted in his mortal form Billy is a kid, but as I remember from the comics and the shows from my time Captain Marvel always acted like an adult, except maybe when he would say "Holy Moley!" that was it. I mean he's suppose to have the wisdom of Soloman and from the trailer I really don't see that. I just hope with all the hype they are giving it, it won't be another let down. On the plus side, the upcoming film has inspired me to order the SHAZAM series on DVD.

I haven't read much of Shazam/Original Captain Marvel since the 70s, but the first few issues of the bwa-ha-ha JL relaunch (late 80s?) had him as, if not a child, then a fairly naive/innocent young adult. But... the stories of the Big Red Cheese were whimsical and in some/many ways silly, but the character himself was basically played straight - he was a mighty hero in a rather childish mileau. This feels more like hero as dumbass, and that's not remotely appealing to me.
I just read a quote from the director where s/he (no idea who the director is!) said something along the lines of aiming for an 80s Action Hero kind of vibe - in which case, I predict this is going to be a mountain of suck, which to be honest has been my impression since the first picture and definitely the first trailer. I don't get an Arnie or Demolition Man type of vibe from this (and even if I did, I'm not sure the world needs new versions of those movies), it feels more like a crappy version of Freaky Friday (or, the obvious comparison, Big), neither of which I want to see in a super-hero version
