I haven't read much of Shazam/Original Captain Marvel since the 70s, but the first few issues of the bwa-ha-ha JL relaunch (late 80s?) had him as, if not a child, then a fairly naive/innocent young adult. But... the stories of the Big Red Cheese were whimsical and in some/many ways silly, but the character himself was basically played straight - he was a mighty hero in a rather childish mileau. This feels more like hero as dumbass, and that's not remotely appealing to me. I just read a quote from the director where s/he (no idea who the director is!) said something along the lines of aiming for an 80s Action Hero kind of vibe - in which case, I predict this is going to be a mountain of suck, which to be honest has been my impression since the first picture and definitely the first trailer. I don't get an Arnie or Demolition Man type of vibe from this (and even if I did, I'm not sure the world needs new versions of those movies), it feels more like a crappy version of Freaky Friday (or, the obvious comparison, Big), neither of which I want to see in a super-hero version Agreed! When I saw Shazam with Billy's kid friend in the trailer, it reminded me of BIG with Tom Hanks.

Yeah it totally reminded me of Big too, but I think it's going to be a hit.

Yeah it totally reminded me of Big too, but I think it's going to be a hit. I hope so, but it did inspire me to get the TV series.

So Geoff Johns Shazam series totally works for me, and this completely works for me. I think this is the superhero movie trailer I've connected with the most.
Which means there's, like, a 90% chance I will hate the finished product. Because trailers lie.

Apparently the early reviews are out and most people are loving it.

Everything I see makes me think this movie is going to be boat loads of fun...and I just can't understand why someone wouldn't want that.

I can't wait to see it! And it is fun seeing the merchandise for the movie slowly trickle out. I got my nephew the smaller Shazam action figure and the one that is bigger, I think it is called Movie Masters or something like that--anyway, he loved them and was asking me all kinds of questions about Shazam.

Everything I see makes me think this movie is going to be boat loads of fun...a nd I just can't understand why someone wouldn't want that.Maybe because the trailers make the lead character look and act like a doofus. Even his Filmation TV version was played as a serious character, and that goes without saying about the 1941 serial version. This looks like WB/DC trying to apologize (for no justifiable reason) for the serious characters & world built with most of the other DCEU movies.

Exactly - DC/Fawcett Captain Marvel was a noble hero who was maybe a little naive or whimsical, but not a dork. This (caveat: from the trailer) is just "Captain Dimwit Kid-for-brains", and that's not a film I have any interest in seeing

What they show in a trailer could amount to all of 5 minutes intro for a bit of silly joke/fun and then be placed aside. Same with him learning to fly. Spidey's trying to learn how to swing on his web in the 1st movie is a similar somewhat silly moment played for comedy outside of the rest of the movie.

See for my money Captain Marvel was never done better than when in the hands of Mike Kunkel in Billy Batson and the Magic of Shazam and Jeff Smith's Shazam! and the Monster Society of Evil. Both were just full of super relatable, light hearted fun that was focused more of pure, childhood wish-fulfillment than straight up super heroics. And really, for a film in this modern market that's the kind of angle that is likely to yield the best results as it offers a very different experience than other super hero films have already given audiences.

An extended clip has been released from Captain Dumbass, oops, sorry, I mean Shazam ;-)
TBH, for me, that one was the worst one yet, but YMMV depending what sort of film you're hoping for
