The trouble is that Marvel overused Venom, which is understandable, given the popularity of the character, but he became less and less interesting with every appearance. Exactly!

In the UK, they've been running 5-10 seconds Venom-voiced short trailers on TV leading up to a full trailer shown a few evenings later. Counter-productive, IMHO - the Venom-voice sounds absolutely pathetic, and the trailer looked even worse than the last one.
If it lives down to the trailier, it's shaping up to be a monumental fiasco, IMHO

Venom reviews are coming in and, to everyone's huge surprise, they're not great. General consensus is that it's rubbish, with a minority view saying it's fun regardless, mostly in a "so bad it's good" way

My warning flags went up when I learned they were disconnecting Venom from Spidey. Stuff like that's always an ill omen.

My warning flags went up when I learned they were disconnecting Venom from Spidey. Stuff like that's always an ill omen. Personally I don't think Venom has to be connected directly to Spidey. I can easily see Venom as a single or one of a group of symbiotic organisms. It doen't require Peter Parker and Spidey's connection to start off the story. Sony might readily enough do more buildup with Venom until there is enough requests of the fan community to have Spidey become Venomized. I am not going into this movie with high or great expectations. As long as it is interesting and entertains on it's own merit then I will be happy. On the other hand I have several friends who are Venom addicts big time and they want this movie in a big way as they pretty much laughed at Topher-Venom in Spidey 3. Biggest complaints were Venom looking like a suit and skinny and not more like the Venom creature in the comics, which this movie looks to have rectified. So gimme some laughs, some thrills and maybe a scare or three and I shall enjoy.

This past decade's made me something of a purist, though. There've been too many superhero films made, too many creative liberties taken, and too much dissatisfaction on my end.

Ok, the girlfriend and I saw this last night.
She wanted to see it more than I did.
I read Venom's original story and I think that's the only one.
I vaguely know the character but never read any more of him because
A. It was the 90's and I mostly wasn't reading Marvel then with few exceptions, and
B. I associate the character with Todd McFarlane, which really isn't fair for Venom as my dislike for McFarlane eclipses how many feel about Rob Liefeld
Anyway, having said that, I really liked the movie.
I went in with cautious expectations and it really delivered.
I'd see it again and look forward to the sequel.
I have to give Marvel Studios credit : I've enjoyed Deadpool, Cable, Domino, and now Venom, where I have very few comics with any of the characters and can't say I've read any stories with the characters that I really liked, but, I've enjoyed the movies with these characters.
I think this will do well enough that we'll see Morbius the Living Vampire as the next Sony / Spidey-Verse movie and based on their track record, I'm looking forward to it.

Symbiotic organisms are not as interesting as a twisted, mirror-image version of Spider-Man, which is what Venom was created to be. Spinning webs? Climbing walls? Makes no sense unless Venom is the dark Spider-Man he was created to be.

Enjoyed the Venom movie. Several things could have been altered or done differently but you get exactly what you hope for in the movie: the interaction between Eddie Brock and the Symbiote Venom. A really great "buddy" cop kind of attitude only it is more bad cop (Eddie) and even badder/nastier cop (Venom) they play with. With one line in the movie, I can actually find "more" about Venom to like as a character: when Venom is telling Eddie about Riot and admits Riot is a "leader" and that Venom himself is like Eddie; kind of a loser. And the reasoning(s) for Venom assisting Eddie and for all semblances being a "hero" (in context of the film) is reasonably well thought out. Not too bad a job but I won't place the glory on Sony, more so on the director and Tom Hardy.

I saw it today and I liked it. I never really followed Venom in the comics, so I had low expectations but I was entertained and found it to be very funny in places. Loved hearing Venom talk to Eddie as they eventually become friendly.

I saw the early showing today at a theatre that I've normally don't go to and it's was good and it's quite original and very entertaining and has its moments. I would strongly recommend it and it's becoming a fan favorite and I just talked to a moviegoer that this his 3rd time he seen it and he loved it.

I saw it and liked it too. I mean I wasn't expecting much - i thought if it's yer regular blow em up movie and the CGI wasn't too lame it could be a fun popcorn movie. As I read though all the bad reviews I just kept thinking "what do these reviewers expect from a Venom movie?". Thumbs up.
