I have no idea about this movie you speak of. I will have to google. Velvet Goldmine Thanks, Phil!

I absolutely LOVE Marc Bolan, and I have for a long time. I love most of all of his stuff (if he sings it, I'm going to own it and listen to it), but I think I like more of his pre-Electric Warrior stuff better. Maybe. Interesting. I have A Beard of Stars and T. Rex, but I don't find them as accessible as Electric Warrior, which is one of about a dozen or so albums that I play start to finish each time. I think it's just perfect. I also really love The Slider and parts of Tanx. Don't have the last four albums they put out. Will have to track them down.

For, you, Phil, because believe it or not, it's a lot easier to snap a picture than to try and name off all the T.Rex albums I have, considering how long some of the titles are. I know this is not all I have, it's just all that I found in a convenient place. Eeek. My Electric Warrior copy looks like Hell, but that thing has gone everywhere with me. Their "T.Rex" album is actually probably my favorite. I know that Electric warrior is more accessible for most, and that is why it was probably their most popular album (everyone knows "Bang a Gong", but to most, that's all they really know), but for me, that early, more instrumentally simplistic stuff is where I really fell in love with Bolan's music. I think it's his voice. My brother makes fun of "Goat Voice", but that is what I think I like the most. His early stuff, to me, shows the use of his voice more than his later stuff. At least in the way I like it. "One Inch Rock" and "The Wizard" are two of my most fave Bolan songs. I mean, this is just me picking my more favorite stuff and choosing stuff that I might like a little less. But to me, I love everything Bolan did. Even his not-best-stuff is still worth a listen. I got that stack of CDs in probably 2 months time, and the only one that was super affordable at the time was "Electric Warrior". I think that T.Rex album cost me almost $30. Which is an insane price for a CD, imo. This was over 12 years ago.

I haven't listened to the whole album and really only know a few more of his songs. Like T. Rex's Bang A Gong, it's the glam rock songs like those that I like to listen to. I've had a good conversation with Dan B (here I think) about glam rock. I remembering him pointing me to a movie about glam rock that had Ewan McGregor, I think, though I forget the name. I think it was suppose to be about Bowie, but he declined to be involved. I think liking Prince and early Prince & the Revolution (and to some extent with NPG) early on before listening to classic rock, got me a taste for the white man's glam rock. :-) I have no idea about this movie you speak of. I love most of all of his stuff (if he sings it, I'm going to own it and listen to it), but I think I like more of his pre-Electric Warrior stuff better. Maybe. Though, I do have a soft spot for "Bolan's Zip-Gun". That album is fantastic, imo. But his early stuff is spot-on for me. I just love his voice. My brother refers to him as "Goat Voice", but that really means nothing to me since he claims Portishead is "Mortuary Music" and Tom Waits and David Bowie are "Angry Circus Music". He doesn't know much about music. He's good for a laugh, though! Beth Gibbons voice is beautiful. Your brother obviously doesn't like women with beautiful voices. Melts into my soul.

Oh, you do not have to tell me nothing. That voice owns my SOUL. <3 Is she still making music? Or did she stop entirely?

As far as I know Portishead - Third was their last album. While her voice is just as wonderful the music is quite different to me. I've listened to it a few times on youtube, but not enough to buy. I wouldn't describe it as bad, but it's not Dummy or Portishead.

I know this is not all I have, it's just all that I found in a convenient place. Oh. I see. That is an impressive cache. I will defer to your superior wisdom. Ok. I just played T. Rex again all the way through. You're right. I'd say "deceptively simple" because there's a lot going on there with the song structures and Bolan's monumental talent, but yeah. I'm moving that into the general rotation. "Goat voice" is funny, but unfair. I don't hear a goat, thank goodness. Oh, golly. I ripped it from youtube a few years ago. Your CD probably sounds way better than my MP3 though. I hope you don't think I was mocking your taste or attempting to "school" you. Clearly, I'm the acolyte in this scenario. I'm grateful for the recommendations.

1.Oh. I see. That is an impressive cache. I will defer to your superior wisdom. Oh, no, I do not have superior wisdom. But thank you. I just have old fandom from over a decade ago, a time when I obsessed about Marc Bolan because I was pretty sure my soulmate died the year I was born. Or some cheesy junk like that. hahahaha. You are correct on "deceptively simple". That is way better than I worded it. There was a lot going on. The Wizard is a brilliant, brilliant song, and my son calls it "our song" because he always makes me play it when we are in the car. I love his voice. I like unusual voices in music. It's also why I love David Byrne's and Joanna Newsom's voices. They choose to use them differently, and a very out-of-the-norm type way. Oh, golly. I ripped it from youtube a few years ago. Your CD probably sounds way better than my MP3 though. I hope you don't think I was mocking your taste or attempting to "school" you. Clearly, I'm the acolyte in this scenario. I'm grateful for the recommendations. Not at all. I hope I didn't sound like a pretentious jerk. It's just music excites me, and I can talk music almost more than I can talk comics (because I've been listening longer than I've been reading).

That's not cheesy. Many of us are "old souls" whose heroes/"soulmates" passed when we were young. That's charming. I used to weave delightful, child-friendly explanations/excuses to my daughters for things I simply wanted to play in the car on the way to school. Black Sabbath's "Faeries Wear Boots" became a Grimm's fairy tale in my re-telling.
David Byrne! Let's talk more about him and Talking Heads tomorrow or whenever. Much to say. You'll have to educate me on Joanna Newsom.
You didn't. And I enjoy talking about it too. So, how is T. Rex Live at the BBC? I am an avid fan of live recordings. Is this a John Peel session or something else?

Is the album that Bang A Gong have similar songs to it? Love that guitar lick in that song. Those always make a song addicting to listen to. See also Beast of Burden and Fame.

So only the three albums then? They did songs from Dummy and Portishead with a full orchestra. So four, but three with original songs? I guess it depends on how you see remixes so to speak. I haven't listen to it in years as my CDs are boxed up with only one player in the house that works. YouTube can usually find what I need except Prince. But all his CDs are out and handy

That's not cheesy. Many of us are "old souls" whose heroes/"soulmates" passed when we were young. I had always heard "Get it on" on the radio, but I was going with a friend to a show, and she was Electric Warrior in her car on our way home, so I ordered the CD the next day. I loved Marc Bolan's voice the minute I heard it her car.
THAT is a wonderful story!! And Black Sabbath! Love them, too. When I was a teenager, I had a boyfriend who was a bassist in a local cover band, and they wanted me to sing NIB for them, only they could not get me into the bar (I was only 18). Which is probably for the best, anyway, because I was not ready to sing in front of people like that. You didn't. And I enjoy talking about it too. So, how is T. Rex Live at the BBC? I am an avid fan of live recordings. Is this a John Peel session or something else? I looked on the disc, and in the booklet, and while it doesn't have "John Peel" in the title of the collection, he is mentioned in the booklet as working with T.Rex, so I believe some of the songs, at the very least, had have to been from his sessions. Anyway, it's pretty good. The sound, imo, is nice and even.

It's hard to say because, to me, all Marc's music is in the same vein. That's not to say that all the songs sound the same, but his songs don't sound as wildly different, as say, Bowie's songs all do from each other. I'm not even sure if that is correct. Marc had a zone that he stayed in. Even his rockier music was organic in sound, and could be taken back to that fantasy forest fairy with magical creatures. That's just what he did. And it was great stuff. Give it a youtube shot.
