We're just a few months away now from the beginning of my comic buying life. Technically, we already passed it, as I bought Blackhawk #269 and 270. But those were a one-off until the fall of 1984 when I was able to really start buying comics. I'm excited to get to that point so I can relive my first comic buying days. My very first comic book purchase is still a year away. I'd be excited to get to when I really started buying comics off the racks regularly (1989), but that only lasted a few years. I've spent far more years buying books from everyone else's childhood than my own. Of course, if you'd grown up on the cusp of the '90s, you'd probably do the same. Either that or go to a forum that's more Rob Liefield friendly

From Mikes News Stand for June 1984 I see that I bought at the time: New Gods #4 Saga of Swamp Thing #28 Six from Sirius #1 I had stopped buying Marvel for some time - the Shooter era wasn't for me, but was also starting to give up on the DC books I had moved to, like Teen Titans. I was still enjoying Saga of the Swamp Thing, though, which I had been reading from the beginning. I can't claim that I recognised Alan Moore's genius while reading his ST: I just saw his run as an interesting new change of direction for what was already a pretty good series. Six from Sirius was an automatic buy for me as a big fan of both Moench and Gulacy. It didn't disappoint. But DC's reprints of The New Gods was the comic that was making the biggest impression on me then. It was my first time reading the entire series - back issues were hard to come by in my part of the world back then.

I still wasn't buying new issues yet. I recognize many of those covers, and must have at one time or another owned a few, but can't remember if I actually read them or not. TMNT #1 and Elfquest #19 are the only ones I'm absolutely sure I've read, but at a later time of course.
EDIT: Ah. I'm still a month behind. This was regarding May.

At this time I was 13 and was visiting my local comic shop when I could get across town (New England Comics in Brockton, Mass - at this time in a tiny store on Main Street - moved a couple of times to larger locations since then). I had a local convenience store that I grabbed stuff from when I couldn't get to the comic store.
Alpha Flight # 14 - bought AF from 13 up to part-way thru Mantlo's run, mostly because John Byrne but was never really thrilled with it and haven't reread them in at least 10 years. Avengers # 247 - one of my favorite titles but not my favorite part of Stern's run, mostly because the art wasn't doing it for me (Milgrom & Sinnott, if i recall) Conan # 162 - not one I remember much about except I think John Buscema did pencils? Daredevil # 211 - I think this is near the end of Denny O'Neil's run prior to Miller coming aboard for "Born Again", think art by Mazzechelli (sp?) but not as stylized as it would become later. Fantastic Four # 270 - part of Terminus' 1st appearance (also my first intro to Wyatt Wingfoot). She-Hulk's here too. Pretty good, at least I thought so at the time. Hulk # 299 - the big lead up to #300, where Hulk fights a bunch of heroes and gets banished to limbo/crossroads. I really liked the combo of Sal Buscema & Gerry Taaloc (sp?) on art. Iron Man # 186 - part of the storyline where Rhodey took over for Stark. This run was a bit offbeat and I enjoyed it. I liked the art as well altho others may disagree. Machine Man # 1 - part of a limited series, Barry Windsor Smith contributed! I enjoyed this look at marvel 2020 but BWS' contributions really added a lot. Secret Wars # 6 - can't recall exactly what transpired in this issue but a limited series I enjoyed very much at the time, think maybe Layton was pencilling to give Mike Zeck a break. Marvel Tales #167 -reprint old Spidey comics, I recall collecting reprints of AF #15 and Spiderman 1 -40 or so. A great way to read these stories prior to the Essential collections. This was an annual with Dr. Strange (and Baron Mordo), cool!! Marvel Team-Up # 145 - Spidey & Iron Man vs. whiplash - don't remember much altho its close to the end of the series. Marvel Team-Up Annual #7 - Spidey & Alpha Flight. Completely unmemorable to me. I feel like they tried the new coloring process for this ish but might be wrong. hated that new coloring process a lot! New Mutants # 20 - probably the most ground-breaking of the marvel comics on this list, with Sienkewicz really starting to go wild on art. Story is OK but the art.. wow! Peter Parker Spectacular SM - guest starred Cloak & Dagger, fighting a cyborged out Silvermane if I remember. Kind of mediocre if I recall. Power Man & Iron Fist # 109 - don't remember much about this one either. Rom # 58 - as I recall Steve Ditko was pencilling around now? A decent series, lots of guest stars - ant man's in this one Uncanny X-Men #185 one of my first X-men issues, good stuff! West Coast Avengers (limited series) # 2 - I really liked this limited series (probably helped that I found the artwork superior to the art in avengers at this time). Introducing "the Blank" - whatever happened to him?
No DC comics as I will still pretty much a Marvel Zombie at this point.
Later picked up (floppy) copies of:
Bernie Wrightson Master Of Macabre # 4 - stories are a mixed bag but its Wrightson, c'mon!
Saga of Swamp Thing # 28 - started collecting Alan Moore's run after getting the werewolf issue (30-something)? Later got this one signed by Bissette when he appeared at a comic store. Managed to embarrass myself by bugging him about how much money comic artists make, ugh!
Omega Men # 18 - just got this one a couple of years ago when I started collecting Omega Men on the basis of liking L.E.G.I.O.N. and R.E.B.E.L.S. Good stuff!
So 17 purchased at the time with 3 more later. The 17 cost $10.60, lol.

Here's the link for July, 1984: www.dcindexes.com/features/timemachine.php?site=all&type=calendar&month=7&year=1984&sort=alphaWith 5 Wednesdays, this was a big month for me as I continued the transition from buying from racks at the local convenience story to heading to LCS and starting to look for back issues, etc. I ended up getting 27 titles at the time, all marvel as I was still a Marvel Zombie then. One thing that stands out for me is that a few of the series I'd been collecting were heading towards a big "number" at the same time, between Hulk 300 coming out this month, Captain America at 298-299, and Thor with 348-349. I was pretty pumped up at the time about seeing some long storylines reach finales. I really enjoyed Hulk 300.. in general I'm a fan of Mantlo & S.Buscema's run (especially with Gerry Talaoc inking) but it was cool to see a big chunk of the Marvel U try to take down Hulk (Avengers, Power Man & Iron Fist, Human Torch, Doc Strange.. even Spidey and Daredevil were there rescuing folks). I especially liked Iron Fist trying to use the iron fist on Hulk and totally failing, lol. Thor holds up pretty well in this battle though. THe Captain America story was also pretty cool, altho the art by Paul Neary didn't do much for me. As I recall somehow Red Skull ages Cap which culminates in a geezer battle in 300. In Amazing Spiderman 257 & 258, DeFalco & Frenz continued their run with a couple of (IMO) great issues, one introducing the Puma (whom I saw again most recently in Modok's 11) and the other with a battle between old/new costumes, in a manner of speaking. I know Frenz has his detractors but I really enjoyed his work on this title- having Joe Rubinstein on inks probably helped! New Mutants 21 continued to totally blow me away with Sienckiewicz' art (and I liked the new character, Warlock); X-Men was a Barry-Windsor Smith issue about Storm and Forge which kind of confused me at the time altho I liked the artwork. Byrne's FF contribution involved a throwback to the old monster titles, which I thought was cool. Marvel had a few limited series running at this time that I enjoyed quite a bit. Machine Man # 2 continued to explore MM's new life in 2020, the Barry Windsor Smith inks probably were a big part of the draw. Also West Coast Avengers 3 came out, with Graviton beating the new team fairly easily! At the time, I had looked forward to the new Micronauts relaunch but the story by Peter Gillis didn't really work for me, for whatever reason. I liked Kelly Jones' art though. Later on I did get a couple of DC floppies from this month, namely Swamp Thing 29 and Omega Men 19. That's about all in terms of specific issues I wanted to comment on. Here's the full list for what its worth: Alpha Flight # 15 Amazing Spiderman # 257-258 Avengers # 248 Captain America # 298-299 Daredevil # 212 Dr. Strange #67 Fantastic Four #271 Fantastic Four Annual # 18 Hulk #300 Iron Man #187 Kull # 6 Secret Wars # 7 Machine Man # 2 Marvel Tales # 168 Marvel Team-up # 146 Micronauts (new voyages) #1 - 2 New Mutants # 21 Peter Parker # 95 Rom # 59 Thor #348-349 West Coast Avengers (LS) # 3 What If # 47 X-Men # 186

Hmm, I remember Fridays being new comic day at the comic shop through most of the mid-80's. It was all through high school. None of the local stores got new comics before Friday the UPS trucks didn't arrive until Friday morning. And even when I worked at a shop in Boston in college in '89-'90 and we picked up the books from the local distributor and didn't get them shipped, Thursday night was the earliest we could go but Friday morning pick up was the standard. I didn't think Wednesday became New Comic Day until after the distributor wars were fought and only Diamond was left standing....though I may be wrong about that. -M
