Beauty and the Beast #1 (don't judge me) Too late. We've all done (and bought) things we're not proud of. Moving on...

Well since the 40 years ago thread was revived, time to revive it's younger sibling.... So in May 1985...I wouldn't turn 16 and start working for another 2 months, so I was very cash strapped at the time, 3 months later with paycheck in hand I started a pull list at a comic shop for the very first time... At the time I bought... Avengers 258 Doctor Who 11 Flash 348 Justice League of America 241 Shadow War of Hawkman 4 Thor 358 I currently have in one form or another... Amethyst 8 Arak, Son of Thunder 47 Arion, Lord of Atlantis 34 Aztec Ace 13 Conan the Barbarian 173 Conan the King 30 Crisis on Infinite Earths 5 Deadman 4 Dreadstar 19 Elfquest 1 Flash 348 Green Lantern 191 Jon Sable, Freelance 28 New Mutants 31 Nexus 12 Rocket Raccoon 4 Shadow War of Hawkman 4 Starslayer 32 Swamp Thing 39 Sword of the Atom Special 2 Thor 358 X-Men 196 Warlord 96 Warlord Annual 4 Who's Who in the DC Universe 6 -M

I was having a hard time finding comics I wanted to read around then. I had long since given up on Marvel and some of the DC series I had been reading were either cancelled (Night Force) or lost my interest (teen Titans). The only things I recognise from Mike's News-stand for May 1985 are Ambush Bug #3 and Swamp Thing #39. Pretty sure I bought those, though I no longer have my copies of them. I think I originally gave Ambush Bug a try because of Keith Griffen, whose art I liked from his 70s work at Marvel. Not sure how AB would read to me now, but at the time I remember enjoying the humour. Moore's ST was excellent, but it wasn't until Watchmen, Miracleman, and V for Vendetta that I really was blown away by his talent.

Has it already been 30 years? I look at these titles and remember those books as if I had bought them, say, three-four years ago.
Life goes by so fast.

All-Star Squadron #48 Ambush Bug #3 American Flagg #24 Avengers #258 Aztec Ace #13 Batman #386 Blue Devil #15 Cerebus #74 Crisis on Infinite Earths #5 DC Comics Presents #84 Deadman #4 Detective Comics #553 Life of Captain Marvel #2 New Mutants #31 Squadron Supreme #1 Swamp Thing #39 Sword of the Atom Special #2 Thor #358 Who's Who #6
Secret Wars had killed a lot of my enthusiasm for Marvel at this point, and Crisis would soon do the same for DC...

Groo and Uncanny X-Men are the only two I'm 100% sure were in my collection. Neither would have been off the newsstand though. A couple other series in there I follow, or have followed, and might have owned. But also a lot of series I followed that I know for a fact I never had the 5/85 issue of.

Nightmares from Eclipse looks like it reprinted a couple of outstanding horror stories by Don MacGregor and Paul Gulacy that had originally appeared in the Warren mag Eerie a few years earlier. I wonder if they were coloured in this new format? If so, I'd recommend seeking out the originals first, though I admit to some curiosity as to how they might look in colour..

30 years ago I was almost 24 and on my last year in the Navy, living in Newport, RI:
All-Star Squadron #48 Avengers #258 Batman and the Outsiders #24 Cloak and Dagger #2 Crisis #5 Deadman #4 Defenders #146 DNAgents #22 Dreadstar #19 FF #281 Gargoyle #4 Green Lantern #191 Infinity Inc #17 Jonni Thunder #4 JLA #241 LSH #13 Life of Captain Marvel #2 New Mutants #31 New Teen Titans #11 Omega Men #29 Red Tornado #2 Secret Wars II #2 Shadow War of Hawkman #4 Squadron Supreme #1 Sword of the Atom Special #2 Tales of the Legion #326 Tales of the Teen Titans #56 Thing #27 X-Men #196 Who's Who #6
Total spent: $28.80 for 30 comics, at an average price of 96 cents per comic. Over 10 times what I spent in May, 1975, and over 3 times the price per comic. Amazing what having your own income can do, along with inflation.

Deadman, because the originals in Strange Adventures were spottily distributed in my neck of the woods
Batman and Detective, mostly out of loyalty
Hawkman, because I wanted him to come back somehow
Jemm, which I thought looked interesting, but still haven't read. Should I?
Swamp Thing, because I enjoyed reading it
All-Star Squadron, ditto
Who's Who, b/c it was a comic nerd's fun hour or two, filled with trivia and ret-cons disguised as unrevealed info
Marvel Tales, a passable gap-filler
Thor, b/c of Simonson
