Lots of stuff, as I am deep in disposable income and DC's renaissance. Plus, the indies are still strong, though the dominoes are about to start tumbling, in the next couple of years. Comico went through an editorial change around this time frame and would soon revamp their logo. Some of their creators would start to depart, soon. Right now, Maze Agency continues to be a triumph and Grendel is ending the Eppy Thatcher storyline and beginning the Orion Asante/Grendel Khan story ( I came late to the series, due to access and continuity). This little number featured an exploration of the post-Crisis Lex Luthor. Guess where they got the cover idea? Life imitates art; except Lex was a helluva lot smarter! Oh, and that cover blurb on the original? Trump personally (via his company) bought enough copies to manipulate it onto the bestseller list, then used that factor to sell the book,. Unfortunately, it became a common practice, as regnery Press did similar things with their political books, with large chunks bought by political campaigns and PACs, then the status was used to push it on the news and to the general public. Much like the Oscars, the NYT bestseller list has a lot of massaging going on.

Big month; Batman Year 3 (also Robin Year 1, technically), Action Comics is back as a Superman only book, with George Perez, copying the cover of Superman #1, Superman has returned to Earth after his space exile and after defeating Mongul. Dark Horse continues their Predator series, which would inspire the cinematic sequel, to the original. Maze Agency ends their Comico run; but, will soon return at the new Innovation. Lone Wolf and Cub continues to be the book worth reading, from First. DC is launching Piranha Press, with Beautiful Stories for Ugly Children, Etc, and Sinners. The Cowboy Wally Show, Gregory and Epicurus the Sage will follow. Death makes her debut, in Sandman. Also, some movie, based on a comic book is coming out. That fad won't last. Can't be that good; I heard it took nearly 10 years to get a script, a cast and a finished film. Probably be some campy thing, like that old tv show. I mean, come on, the cast that Mr Mom guy in it; it has to be a comedy, right?

June 1989
What a big time for comic book collecting. Batman movie had everyone asking me to recommend them any Batbooks for reading in hopes they could turn them around for big $$. Plenty of other choice material for reading. Variety abounds everywhere you look. A great time to be an Avengers fan with 4 different comics this month.
Action 643 Adventures of Superman 457 Aquaman 3 Avengers 308 Avengers Annual 18 Avengers Spotlight 23 Avengers West Coast 49 Badger 52, 53 Batman 436, 437 Blackhawk 5 Captain America 359, 360 Captain Atom 31 Detective Comics 602 Doc Savage 11 Doom Patrol 25 FF 331 Firestorm 88 Flash 29 GI Joe 91 GI Joe Special Missions 26 Green Arrow 21 Green Arrow Annual 2 Hawkworld 1 Iron Man 247 Thor 408 Mister Miracle 7 Nexus 61, 62 Nth Man 3 Phantom 5 Power of Atom 15 Quasar 1 Star Trek Movie Special 1 Starman 13 Suicide Squad 31 Superman 34

July 1989, making big bucks as a licensed journeyman butcher at the local grocery chain Smitty's. Able to indulge in my favorite hobby of new comic books there is so much goodness to choose from and to enjoy.

July 1989. Tv of the period: MacGyver, Murder She Wrote, Newhart, The Wonder Years, Tour of Duty (set in Vietnam, during the war), Matlock, Beauty and the Beast, Quantum Leap, Miami Vice, and Highway to heaven. In theaters: Lethal Weapon 2, License to Kill, When Harry Met Sally, UHF, Turner & Hooch. Still in theaters: Batman and indiana Jones & the Last Crusade. My comics: Long wait (one year between issus) for Rocketeer Adventure Magazine #2 (Cliff's New York Adventure); it would be another 6 years and a different company before we got the third and final issue. The movie wasn't helping Dave meet a schedule. Justice Inc was the second try and second failure for DC and the Avenger. No one seemed to know what to do with the character, apart from Ron Goulart, who wrote new adventures for the paperback line, in the 70s (after they reprinted the pulps, which weren't that many). Marvel/Epic's Mebius line was starting to release the Lt Blueberry material, with Chihuahua Pearl (I didn't get it until later). Dark horse was doing their second Aliens mini. DC's Piranha Press is still experimenting; Vertigo still doesn't exist. Batman Year 3 continues. McFarlane is on Amazing Spider-Man.

Summer of 1989, I was subletting an apartment on Commonwealth Ave in the Brighton area of Boston, working in Cleveland Circle at a movie theatre, and buying my comics through the Westfield subscription service. It was the summer of the Batman movie and the release of the second edition of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. What I remember getting form Westfield at the time was:
Amazing Spider-Man 323, 324 Avengers 309 Avengers West Coast 50 Batman 438 Captain America 361, 362 Detective Comics 603, 604 Dr. Fate 9, Annual 1 Dreadstar 48 Greatest Joker Stories Ever Told tpb Justice League America 30 New Titans 58 Uncanny X-Men 251, 252
I would stop in to New England Comics in Coolidge Corner every few weeks as well and pick up things that caught my eye, but Secret Origins 44 is the only thing that I recognize form here as having picked up at the time.
