Here's what I bought off the stands this month in 1989:
Amazing Spider-Man #327 Avengers #312 Avengers Spotlight #27 Avengers West Coast #53 Batman #442 Captain America #365 Groo #60 Justice League America #33 Legends of the Dark Knight #1
I think that's it!
A lot of titles this month were books I had just dropped, or books I hadn't quite started picking up yet. It looks like a transition period for me in terms of what I was buying. And I wasn't thrilled with my purchases either. ASM, Batman, JLA, and LotDK would all be dropped in a matter of a couple months after this.

I was starting to get more indie titles, which are not reflected as well at Mike's Amazing World and several of my books were coming to an end. The Question has a few more issues, then turns into a quarterly. Manhunter is about done. I abandoned JLA not too long after Giffen and DeMatteis left and JLE not too much later. LODK I stuck with for quite a while. It started rocky; but, got very good, very quickly, with things like "Prey" and "Blades." After the second film, it became more of a mixed bag and it depended on the storyline, for me. I would come back for good ones, then drop the book again. Classic X-Men I stuck with until they got up to the transition from Paul Smith to JRJR, which is where I dropped the original book. I saw no point in continuing the reprint book when I got there. Otherwise, I barely touched Marvel for the next several years. Nick Fury was pretty much in hopes of better stories, because I loved the character. Never really happened, even when they revived Strucker and HYDRA.

November 1989:
Eightball #2 Loved this series and always excited when a new issue came out. Along with Love and Rockets and the other Hernandez brothers books, my favourite comic of the 90s.
Neat Stuff #15 I was never a consistent reader of this series or of Peter Bagge's work in general as I was of Clowes or the Hernandezes, and this was one of only around 3 or 4 issues of Neat Stuff that I bought. I liked the Hate series that came along a few years later better, but even that faded for me after the first 15 or 20 issues.
Ring of the Nibelung #1 Really nice Gil Kane artwork, always liked it when he inked his own pencils. And credit to Roy Thomas for the idea of adapting Wagner's Ring to comics. As an adaptation, the results are mixed but that's only to be expected given the nature of the source material.

As you can see, we are at the height of my collecting period. DC is very strong, at this point, with the Batman movie feeding interest in those titles, which is then reflected by more Bat material. The indies are still strong, though the bottom would start falling out, for some, as First launched their revival of Classics Illustrated, which was a massive flop and cash drain, for them, killing the company. The Image crew are at Marvel, but Classic X-Men, Nick Fury and Destroyer are my only Marvel titles and I would drop Nick Fury, after getting bored with this version of SHIELD (can't remember when, but not too much longer). Destroyer was a short-lived experiment and not as good as the books; but, not bad. Gaiman & Buckingham had launched Miracleman: The Golden Age. Malibu was occasionally doing interesting things, Innovation was becoming a home for wayward titles and interesting new things, Grendel was in its last storyline, before Comico went TU. Dark Horse is cooking with gas, as they are about to land some major names and launch new books from them. Good times.

January 1990 with plenty of Marvel taking my dollars.sprinkle in a few DC and occasionally something different from independents that were all passing away rather quickly. From DC I was still turned on to the combo of Superman and Adventures of Superman, Starman and Suicide Squad and Flash and I was excited with DC starting up Star Trek with continuing adventures from the movies and Next Generation to read more from the television show. The Atomic Duo of Captain Atom and Firestorm remained strong interests for me while Starman was a delight and Suicide Squad was still going strong. Marvel took my money with Avengers/Avengers West Coast and Quasar became a favorite read.
Adventures of Superman 463/464 Avengers 315 Avengers West Coast 56 Captain America 368 Captain Atom 38 Doc Savage 18 FF 338 Firestorm 95 Flash 36 GI Joe 98 Green Arrow 29 Nth Man 10 Phantom 12 Quasar 8 The Shadow Strikes 6 Star Trek 6 Star Trek Next Generation 5/6 Starman 19/20 Suicide Squad 38

January 1990:
Love and Rockets #32 - the Love and Rockets of this era, from when I started reading regularly with #28 to the last issue of the first volume, #50, is one of my best memories of reading periodical comics.
Ring of the Nibelung #3 - I think this 4-issue series might be a little under-rated; love Kane's solo art, inking his own pencils.

Classic X-men became X-men Classic, so we can have an X at the front of the title. Manhunter comes to a merciful end. Ostrander started it with a bang, then lost sight of what made it cool in favor of family drama, which made it dull. Also, he never came up with another villain like Dumas, which is why he reappeared at the end of the series. Superman was being manipulated by the Eradicator. The Phantom came to and end and married Diane Palmer. Mandrake and Lothar were in attendance. This had been done in the comic strip years before. DHP had Matt Wagner's infamous Aerialist. Interesting story; but, look closely at the cover and you will see what most people remember it for. Pepe Moreno's Batman: Digital Justice was released, trumping Iron man: Crash. Moreno produced it on an Amiga graphics system and, for the time, it looked pretty good. Story was so-so. DC also released Generation Zero in a collected graphic novel, around this time. This was the series from Moreno and Archie Goodwin, from the end of Epic Illustrated. The Atlantis Chronicles debuts. I wasn't that fond of Peter David's story; but, Esteban Maroto's art was gorgeous.
