August 1985, is much easier to recall. I still had not gotten onboard, with DC and european comics (not until 1987) and I simply bought everything Marvel. It was a good deal of comics, for summer reading. Here's the list of comics I Bought Off The Stand But No Longer Own: I had a few Spanish-language comics like these, and they were a very pleasant way to practice the language. I never could get over the fact that Wolverine is called "Lobezno", though. So cute and cuddly!

I never could get over the fact that Wolverine is called "Lobezno", though. So cute and cuddly! That was a hard choice to make. The real animal, "Wolverine" stands for, is practically unknown in Spain, so it didn't make for an attractive option. In fact, the whole family of animals it pertains to, is equally unfamiliar to us. You have to go higher up the order, where we find wolfs. They could've just called him "lobo", but they figured a small one, would look more like the real deal. Reaching that point, they could've also called him "lobato", which is the same, but that's the more usual nomenclature, a surname even, so "lobezno" was probably chosen because everyone would identify it as some kind of wolf, even though many wouldn't picture it as a part of the litter.

Interesting! The French kind of cheated and went for a feline, the serval, which luckily happens to be yellow and have very long ears. It's actually a pretty good choice if one insists on using that silly yellow color (who ever heard of a yellow wolverine?) A proper wolverine in French is called a glouton, which also describes a slob who eats all the time. As a superhero name, it would invoke the big guy from Monty Python's The meaning of life far more than a fierce forest creature. (In Canada the animal is also called carcajou, which sounds more badass with its multiple K sounds... but we rarely get to translate things for the greater French market).

That is indeed cheating, feliformia and caniformia are the two main branches, among the order of carnivora. Although using a word like "lobezno", is also a trick. One that works pretty well, too. When I was little, I thought it referred to some kind of small wolf, not a wolf cub, though.

Let's go back in time Mike's Newsstand on sale Oct 1985This was a weird month for me in '85 as it was when hurricane Gloria hit and we were without power for several days, so I was making daily trips to 7-11 for a while to get milk, snacks, etc. after school and raiding the comic rack when I could in addition to getting the handful of books I signed up for at the lcs. It's when I started buying more DC because I picked up Crisis and when I really started getting X-Men books from Marvel. What I got then... Amazing Spider-Man #272-273 Avengers #263 Crisis on Infinite Earths #10-11 Dr. Who #16 GL #196 JLA #246 Thor #363 Uncanny X-Men #201 West Coast Avengers #5 X-Men Annual #9 X-Men/Alpha Flight #2 I have too many books from this month now to list them all.... -M

I was well into buying proper U.S. comics (as opposed to the black & white UK reprints) at a darkened, dingy newsagents shop at this point...
Amazing Spider-Man #272 Marvel Graphic Novel - The Amazing Spider-Man: Hooky Marvel Tales #183 (reprinting Amazing Spider-Man #43) The Spectacular Spider-Man #110 Star Wars #103 Web of Spider-Man #11
