On to the next group #42 ELONGATED MAN Would he make my Top 50? No. I was not happy that he got to be in the JLA instead of Plastic Man. He's not bad in his own short adventures or as Barry Allen's sidekick. Plastic Man is on my list and quite and in the top 25 and I'm not telling you his rank is! I rather have Plastic Man than Elongated Man any day ...

Number 38 - Black LightingAlter Ego - Jefferson Pierce Team Affiliations - Justice League of America and Batman and the Outsiders Created by - Tony Isabella Illustrated by - Trevor Von Eeden Abilities Electricity generation and manipulation, Limited flight, Force field generation, and Skilled martial artist and Olympic level athlete to boot. Interesting Fact - When Lex Luthor was elected President of the United States in 2000, he appoints Jefferson Pierce as Secretary of Education, Pierce accepting as he concludes that he can do more good working within the system than outside it. Reason for Rank: I like him due to the fact of his intelligence, working the problem head on and most of all assisted on so many Superheroes that people often forget that he is a great team player that often gets neglected. That's why he's ranked number 38 on my list of heroes.

Nothing to say for Black Lightning since I never read anything he was in. But c'mon, Isn't it time to drop the Black in his name. As for Mr Terrific, the Terry Sloane persona was ok for the 40s but the Michael Holt character is so much more interesting. Thank god they didn't rename him Black Mr Terrific

Although it looks like dark blue, i think that's actually shaded black as it's basically the same color as his hair.

Actually when he first first appeared his powers derived from his belt on his costume emitted energy that liked like black lightning bolts. As for the name...and comes from writers within the last 10 years or so... that he chose the name Black Lightning because he "was the only one of us around" at the time, and he "wanted to make sure everyone knew who they were dealing with. Which I think is a bit of a cop out...instead of something along the line of being proud of heritage and an everyday hero and rising up to fight crime in the slums and protect the innocents and serve as a role model for the younger generation.

I thought I remembered that his lightning was originally black. DC should have never changed that.

Since all the black super-heroes had "black" in their super-name, I wonder if the Falcon was confusing to the public or to the authorities. The cops might say "Captain America is on the scene with the Black Falcon!" Or Nick Fury might tell government agents that Falcon was on the way, and when Sam Wilson showed up, they'd go, "Oh, hi, Black Falcon. We were told that Falcon was going to be here too, but while we wait for him, your help is welcome in the fight against the Mole Man."

Number 36 - Max MercuryAlter Ego - Max Crandall Team Affiliations - All-Star Squadron and Freedom Fighters Created by - Jack Cole Illustrated by - Chuck Mazouijan Abilities Super speed, Molecular control, and Time and dimensional travel Interesting Fact - When the character reappeared in early 1990s issues of The Flash, his name had to be changed from "Quicksilver" to "Mercury" to avoid confusion with Marvel Comics' Quicksilver. Notable Fact - In Waid's origin of the character, he was originally a scout with the US Cavalry in the 1830s. A friend of the local Indian tribes, he was shocked and dismayed to find them massacred on the orders of his commanding officer. Enchanted by a dying Indian shaman, he gained super-speed. In the years that followed, he became known to the Indians as Ahwehota ("He Who Runs Beyond The Wind"), and to everyone else as Windrunner Reason for Rank: You don't call him the Zen Master of Speed and having said that - he taught Wally West all about the Speed Force; Great Teacher, Mentor, and most of all a true pioneer of Super Speedsters.

Number 35 - Red TornadoAlter Ego - John Smith Team Affiliations - Justice League of America, Justice Society of America, and Young Justice Created by - Gardner Fox Illustrated by - Dick Dillin Abilities Air and wind manipulation, Superhuman strength, physical resistance, and speed, and Self-repair Interesting Fact - During the 100th meeting of the Justice League of America, the JLA is summoned to Earth-Two to assist the JSA in defeating the Iron Hand, a sworn foe of the Seven Soldiers of Victory (SSV). The Iron Hand has created an orbiting weapon, shaped like a hand, that threatens Earth-Two, and the JSA are unable to stop it. Doctor Fate summons a being known as the Oracle, who informs them of the Iron Hand's last defeat, which cost the life of one of the Seven Soldiers of Victory. The JLA and JSA split into teams and rescue the members of the SSV, who had been scattered throughout time, and with their help create a weapon that would destroy the Iron Hand's device. The delivery of the device to its necessary location is a suicide mission, one which Red Tornado secretly takes while the other heroes are engaged in dealing with the Iron Hand and debating over who would go. In the resulting explosion, Red Tornado is believed to have been destroyed, however, Red Tornado survives and is catapulted to the Earth-One universe, where he ultimately became a member of the Justice League of America. In the JLA, Red Tornado finally finds a measure of acceptance. Reason for Rank: Although he's an android - he possess human qualities and he's thinks independently and I find his time during the Satellite Era of the Justice League one of his greatest times of his existence and most of all he has a heart and a conscience that makes him unique.

There were African or African-American super beings without the word "black" as part of their code-names such as Vixen, Bumblebee, Nubia, Tyroc, and Invisible Kid. I think the worst example of what you're saying goes to John Stewart who was regularly called "Black Lantern" during the early years of his debut. He had the same amount of black on his costume that Hal Jordan did so I think it's pretty obvious that the "black" in his this referral was due to his skin color.

Tyroc was a travesty but at least his name wasn't racially offensive.

From the latest pair, Max Mercury means diddly to me-never read anything with him.Introduced months apart , Red Tornado (JLA #64 Aug 1968) and Marvel's The Vision (Avengers # 57 Oct 1968) I can't help comparing the 2. Both are re-imagined Golden Age names. Both re-introduced in their respective company's premier team books (AVENGERS & JLA ).Both non-humans desperate to be accepted as equals. The Vision was far away the superior of the two.I even believed an android could cry
