Just saw it. And I liked it. I think DCEU is doing better with the solo movies. Wonder Woman was good and so was this one. Unfortunately DC stumbled launching their DCEU so critics and fans already assume DC movies will suck and Marvel movies will be good. For the record I didn't really enjoy Avengers: Infinity War. I felt it was too bloated and too "busy".
Back to Aquaman. They did the origin right. Short and concise. They toned down Aqua Bro persona somewhat. They humanized him. I liked the scenes with his father. The action was intense. The scenes with Black Manta were great. The story was easy to follow. The only downside was some of the CGI (which superhero movies have to overly rely on). Mostly it looked like they were flying underwater instead of swimming. And Mera's red hair was too red to the point of distraction. It had some light moments and some beautiful scenes shot in exotic locations.
And one last thing. It was a super hero movie that didn't try to explain away or make the sillier stuff from comics "realistic". It just accepted them and embraced them.

Just saw it last night with the girlfriend and her two sons 9 and 12.
I loved it ! I knew it was going to be good from the trailers, and yes they toned down the AquaBro in the movie, but it was nearly perfect IMO.
The origin was good and made sense. The half-breed motive is played heavily here against the pure-blooded Atlantean culture which, to me, gave off a very Roman-esque feel, which made perfect sense considering, from the movie, it was the largest most successful empire in history.
Orm, or Ocean Master, was played terrificly, and I now have a much deeper appreciation for both him and Black Manta as well.
Curious to see exactly how the Kingdom of the Fishermen, something I'd never heard of but I'm only a casual Aqua-fan, will play out later. Surely there's connectivity to The Fisherman later ?
Wan lifted from different sources that are fairly obvious but it's thematic and not direct rip-offs and worked for me.
The action, and graphics, were incredible.
I really, really liked this movie, calling it DC's best with 4.5/5 stars.
WB should have dumped Zach Snyder after BvS and moved on. Everyone can have a bad movie but his Justice League is what really, really hurt the DCEU the most IMO, esp as it was going to get compared directly to Marvel's uber successful Avengers franchise.
WB wisely allowing others into their universe has and will continue to help them shake the stigma and move forward.
Looking forward to this sequel very much.

Glad you liked it too hondobrode. The Trench stuff was right out of a horror movie. The trident stuff felt like Indiana Jones. The one monster felt like Godzilla. The villains were done well. Atlantis did feel Roman-esque. And Wan really embraced the weirdness of undersea life.

Totally agree Michael D
It's DC's strongest movie to date.
Looking forward to a totally different flavor with Shazam, but I think it's going to be another solid film.

I saw with my 5 year old nephew and his parents this weekend. While we all liked it, it did seem long. My nephew got antsy and bored about mid way through but he eventually got back into it ( he can sit through Marvel movies totally transfixed). Loved the cast, the humor, the bright world of Aquaman. The trench scene—-WOW!! Also really loved Black Manta and the sequence in Italy. Nicole Kidman was awesome as was Amber Heard. Kudos to Patrick Wilson, Dolph Lundgren, And Wilam DaFoe too. Also the man who played Arthur’s father. Once Jason Mamoa is seen in the traditional orange and green, he truly became Aquaman to me.

It WAS a long movie but I love em like that, though the water, coffee, soda, and beer I had drank before couldn't wait so just as the Trench entered I HAD to get to the bathroom cause there was about 45 minutes more at that point.
Did a quick 5 minute flash and back and saw the rest of it.
My bro and his wife are going to be it tomorrow.
Shelley and I are going to see Vice, the Christian Bale / Dick Chaney movie, tomorrow.

I enjoyed it and it was whole lot better than the Justice League, Batman vs Superman, and all the rest of the movies that they made ... Orm and Black Manta was fantastic and the general feel is genuine and everything was action packed, the acting was sensational and I was surprised to see Dolph Lundgren in this movie and I can't wait for the sequel too. Total Perfection.

I had a blast with it. I'm not particularly familiar with Aquaman in the comics, I thought this was a fun action-romp with some neat special effects. Gotta join in the kudos conga line and heap some praise on Momoa for being a charismatic lead, Heard for being a wonderful foil, and Abdul-Mateen and Wilson for their great scenery-chewing in the villanous roles.

Like everyone else i really liked this (went in knowing this) as it utilized so many differing aspects. Great and spectacular under the sea adventures, gorgeous land scenes, comedy/humor, monsters of the deep, super hero standards of a villain, a sibling struggle, power mad king, wise vizier and historical bits. This shows Aquaman as a truly humane, capable of mistakes, great dignity/honor and powerful man who has kingship forced upon him. A case of the end makes the means in a weird sort of way as he can't save both worlds without taking upon the mantle of leadership which he truly doesn't want. Is it rather sad that DC's big 2 have had their movie butts kicked by they Royalty team of Princess Diana and King Arthur? Safe to say both WW and Aquaman rate right up there alongside with Black Panther and Cap 1/2 and Ragnarok! A great way to spending 2 1/2 hours on a weekend. Will be seeing this one again over the New Year weekend as there was soooo much to take in. A second viewing will allow the mind to relax and take in some more of the visuals and tertiary pieces now that I have the full story.

Saw it last night with my sister and teen son. Here be spoilers!{Spoiler: Click to show}1) Overall it was fine, a solid B. The special effects were the high point, especially the fluorescent sea life. The sea dragon steeds looked great, as did the kracken thingy.
2) I was distracted by how derivative the plot was of Black Panther (isolated super-country debates attacking the rest of the world; two duels between king and an outside claimant to the throne; good guy loses the first duel but wins the second one, aided by sympathetic royal court members and advanced weaponry). Plus of course the Arthurian angle, which I expected, and a Numenorean origin for Atlantis, which I did not. (I know Numenor was based on Atlantis anyway, but the whole "the island sank into the sea due to scientific hubris" was straight out of The Silmarillion.) The take-home message was "if you have to duel someone, be sure to bring a superior weapon and to hold the duel in an environment in which your opponent has zero experience living, let alone fighting." P.S. wouldn't lava make the underwater arena an unviewable mass of steam and bubbles and scalding water?
3) Amber Heard got plenty to do. I was a bit distracted by how much they were trying to make her look and act like Scarlett Johannson. But it was fun to see Temuera Morrison as Arthur's dad, also tacitly justifying Arthur's Moana tattoos as a Maori thing. Nicole Kidman was barely recognizable under the botox. I didn't recognize Dolph Lundgren either. Getting Julie Andrews to voice the kraken was hilarious. I did a spit-take when I saw her name in the credits.
4) The script was uninspired, lacking in originality. My son and I had a little game of saying the next line of dialogue before the characters did; that's how cliche it was. Few jokes, and the desert treasure hunt, while clearly intended to evoke Indiana Jones, lacked the prickly brio of Indy and Marion and just seemed forced. (Except for Arthur's comment about peeing on the device. That was funny and in-character.)
5) The main character we saw was not well justified by the origin story they gave. He was raised by his blue collar dad but also got regular visits from the Merlin-like royal vizier of Atlantis, to train him in aquatic power and melee combat. Did his dad know about that? How could he not? Arthur made a reference to "gods" just before the final combat. But surely his human dad didn't raise him as a polytheist, nor does religion seem to be a huge part of Atlantean life, so that line came out of nowhere. Apparently Arthur is some sort of maritime blue collar dude who hangs out in biker bars, drinking beer in the morning and watching TV. (The dialogue bit that rang true was when he admitted that he only knew Pinocchio from the movie, not the book.) They missed all sorts of opportunity for "princess vs the uncouth street kid" tensions.
They hit a bit on the environmental thing with the "Atlantis is mad because humans strew the oceans with trash." But they missed a big opportunity for Arthur to empathize with his people about this, and we never see any actual ill consequences to Atlantean society, far beneath the garbage-laden waves.
A better story would have been something like this: Arthur owns a fishing boat that, due to his fish telepathy powers, is able to do incredibly well at collecting fish -- so good that although he's getting rich, he is inadvertently disrupting the ecological balance of Cape Cod. (Which, as the name implies, had an incredible abundance of fish there in the 1600s. Read Mark Kurlansky's book "Cod" sometime.) Algae starts overgrowing, and Atlanteans start getting sick and dying. To save themselves, the Atlanteans begin a series of increasingly forceful strikes against fishing industry targets around the world, ultimately including Arthur's own boat. Lives are lost. Arthur goes on a mission of revenge, then discovers that he's partially culpable for the suffering of the people whom he has rejected. Then unfolds some version of the "should we attack the surface world?" plot seen in the movie, but the Atlanteans are far better motivated, and Arthur far more conflicted, torn between the values of his two societies.
6) They also whiffed the opportunity to meaningfully connect this film to the other DC films. The tsunami attack was a golden opportunity to see a little bit of Superman. It could have been as much as "Superman lifts the grounded destroyer off of the town's waterfront and then discusses the problem with Arthur" or as little as a blur in the distance on TV, averting some element of the catastrophe. Either way, the Cinematic DCU would have been enriched.

O.k., since I started this thread, I guess I should contribute a little more since I finally got around to seeing the movie tonight. Even though I've heard some mixed reviews, with a few people telling me it was outright bad, I was pleasantly surprised. I ended up enjoying it, and my only quibble would be with the last roughly quarter of it - specifically everything that happened after the trench sequence. The big battle scene dragged on for the too long (and I think it could have been cut out altogether), and I thought the bit when Mera makes her speech while Aquaman strikes poses was a bit cheesy. However, the old romantic in me loved that last scene with Arthur's mom and dad on the pier. Altogether a thumbs up, though.

I saw this last night - over all I'm ok with the film but I thought the final battle was so CGI-rific to the point it was just a cartoon. And I normally like cartoons. I've already seen Lord Of The Rings on the big screen, I don't need to see a final battle underwater.
err.. ok, lead up to a final battle.
And there were how many "action pose" shots in the last 20 minutes?
it was still fun, and worth seeing
